EDSM Integration with EDDiscovery

EDD integrates with EDSM in the following manner:

Downloading details of stars from the EDSM Database.

EDD can use EDSM to obtain details on star systems. It can also use Spansh.

EDD checks after each program start and downloads new star data from EDSM or Spansh when required. This is all done automatically.

We strongly advise only to store this data on a SSD. Not on a HDD. The data set is too large now for HDD. Make sure you select an SSD location for application data in the installer, or use safe mode to select a custom location for the system DB.

Downloading data from this service for star database takes bandwidth and disk space. Here you can limit this.

  • Turn on/off star data download : If disabled, no EDSM downloads takes place

  • Galaxy Select : Indicate which areas of the galaxy to store from data obtained from EDSM. This will limit your disk space usage.

An example is to download the whole data from EDSM say on Wifi then turn off the data feed if using a bandwidth limited service (4G) etc.

You can control the download of this data via the settings panel to limit data bandwidth used.

Sending your flight logs and other details to EDSM so you can see your progress on the EDSM website.

Your enter your EDSM name and API Key in the commander settings dialog on the settings panel to enable this option, and click the "Sync To" option. EDD will then send relevant journal entries to EDSM to allow it to keep track of you. See below for how to obtain the API key.

On commander load, EDD checks to see if any EDD journal entries need sending to EDSM. If so, it will send them automatically. This allows you to update EDSM in case you forgot to run EDD during your last play session. If a large number of EDSM entries need sending which would take a considerable time, EDD will ask you what you want to do:

You can choose to send all, send none, send from a date, or defer the decision. All entries before the date you choose to send are marked as sent, so you won't be bothered again. All entries after that date are sent to EDSM.

Downloading flight logs from EDSM into EDD

With a valid EDSM API key entered, click on "Sync From" and EDD will check your flight log on EDSM and create FSD entries for any missing jumps that EDSM has but are not in EDD.

Getting the EDSM API Key

A useful guide by Redfox is here at Guide for Exploration Sharing which gives you a background on why you would want to use EDSM integration.

Make sure that you have an account on www.edsm.net. In EDSM go to the user drop down and select 'My API Key'

Now copy the numbers and and letters from the API Key

Go to the settings panel, select the commander and hit Edit. In the EDSM section, set your EDSM commander name (it may be different to your ED name, if not you can leave it blank) and the EDSM API you obtained.
