1.7.0/Focal release strategy

Option A: Release 1.7.0 only when Focal support is fully ready (including EOL notice, full QA of restore from backup, etc.).

Option B: Release 1.7.0 in January from develop, then 1.8.0 in February, with the main 1.7.0->1.8.0 change being Focal support

  • (Kev) Note we also have v3 deprecation in flight for same time period. It would be good to have messaging in the JI for that sooner rather than later.

  • (Mickael) Does it make sense to warn users about Focal update even if Focal update is not available yet?

  • (Kev) Good point. In that case we'd push out 1.8.0 that would work on Xenial but include the message.

  • (Mickael) Suppose we do 1.7.0 Xenial only, is there anything else that should land as part of that release?

  • (Kev) Can't really think of anything off the top of my head. Requirements updates of any kind, maybe?

  • (Mickael) Not sure. cryptography update hasn't been pushed to prod yet.

  • (Erik) Downside of a 1.7.0 Xenial-only release?

  • (Conor) Downside is two QA periods. But would support a Xenial-only release in January.

  • (Mickael) Kev brought up good point about Tor migrations to v3. We've discussed this in the past -- the idea is to make Focal v3-only. That offers a clean break. Thoughts? Any changes required in 1.7.0?

  • (Kev) One Q that has come up in support was to offer some assistance in pointing people to v3 address from v2.

  • (Mickael) Generic warning on source interface might be a good idea. Redirect might be scary.

  • (Kev) Let's have a separate discussion about that.

Plan of record:

  • 1.7.0 will be Xenial-only. We'll have a dedicated discussion about what, if any, v2/v3 migration related changes may need to ship as part of that release. Tentatively, mid-to-late January release.

  • 1.8.0 will include support for Focal, and (likely time-limited) support for Xenial. Focal will be v3-only. Release likely mid-to-late February.
