How to enable Bluetooth control over my car audio

Daisho Komiyama edited this page Oct 4, 2023 · 6 revisions

One day, I encountered an issue where I could no longer control my car audio system via Bluetooth. While I could still play music and listen to it, I lost the ability to control playback through the car's audio interface. This situation forced me to interact with my phone while driving, which is unsafe. The exact reason for Google's decision to restrict this access is unclear, but it may be related to security concerns, as they are likely prioritizing device security by limiting external access. Consequently, users are now required to control their music directly through their phones rather than using their car's dedicated audio interface.

Money over users' lives. Fuck you, Google.

To resolve this issue, you can adjust the AVRCP settings on your Pixel phone by following these steps:

  1. Open your phone's 'Settings' app.
  2. Navigate to the 'System' section.
  3. Scroll down and select 'Developer options'.
  4. Look for the 'Bluetooth AVRCP Version' setting.
  5. Change it to '1.3'.
  6. Exit the 'Settings' app.
  7. Reboot your phone.

These steps should help restore your ability to control your car audio system via Bluetooth.
