Install Guide
You can download installers for the latest release for Window and macOS from GitHub:
https://github.com/stepmania/stepmania/releases/latest
Precompiled binaries for Linux may be provided with releases, and instructions for compiling from source are also available.
You'll need to install Microsoft's Visual C++ x86 Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 first.
With that done, follow along with the StepMania installer, ensuring that you do not install to Program Files to avoid conflicts with Windows UAC. By default, the installer will install to "C:\Games\" and this is fine for most players.
If you are running Windows 10, it's possible that Windows Defender could cause StepMania to load slowly the first time after your computer boots up. To speed up this initial load:
- Open Windows Defender Security Center (start typing it into the Start menu)
- Click on Virus & threat protection
- Under Exclusions, click Add or remove exclusions and choose the Folder option.
- Navigate to your user data folder and choose the Cache folder.
Installing on macOS is roundabout, but at least we have a guide that gently walks you through the process.
If the precompiled executable is not compatible with your architecture/distro/etc., you'll likely have better luck building from source.
