You can play Minecraft with a friend either by sharing the controls or by both playing as separate players in the same world.

Collaborative playing

New players may wish to play jointly with a friend, who can use a keyboard/mouse to share controls. How you split the controls is up to you, but here are some suggestions to get you started. You may wish to consult the Minecraft eyegaze controls in Minecraft -> Options -> Controls to find what keys are used for different actions.

Simplest starting point

  • Let the eyegaze user turn on "Look with Gaze" and control the Minecraft view with their eyes.
  • Let the keyboard user turn actions on/off like walking, flying, mining, using the following keys:
    • h - start/stop walking
    • g - start/stop flying
    • m - start/stop mining
    • n - mine single block
    • F12 - turn night vision on/off

Building

Building can be tricky for a new user. To begin with, you may want the eye-gaze user to control gaze, walking, flying and so on, but not the placing of the blocks. In this case the keyboard/mouse-user would do the following:

  • Select new items from the inventory by pressing "e" to open the inventory, and selecting items and placing in the hotbar at the bottom
  • Select item from hotbar using mouse scroll wheel
  • Place block using right click
  • Mine single block with left click

Multiplayer over a local network

You can play EyeMine with a friend, if you are both on the same network (e.g. your home wifi).

You do not both need to be using eye gaze to control Minecraft. If one of you is using a keyboard and mouse, you can play on any Mac or Windows PC, but you must be using the Minecraft Java Edition. The eyegaze user(s) must use a Windows PC. You will each need your own Minecraft account to play in the same world together, and need to use the same version of Minecraft (currently EyeMine uses v1.11.2)

Minecraft networking can be a bit tricky depending on your system/network/firewall. It should be as simple as the following:

On one of the computers:

  1. Open the world you want to play (Single Player -> Select World -> Play Selected World)
  2. Once the world has loaded, press Escape to access the game menu.
  3. Click "Open to LAN"
  4. Change to Game Mode: Creative and Allow Cheats: On and click "Start LAN world"

On the other computer:

  1. Launch Minecraft, and select Multiplayer
  2. After a moment, you should see an entry "LAN world". Select this and click "Join Server"
  1. You should now both appear in the same world

Online servers

If you are a serious Minecrafter, you may at some point want to join an online server that someone else has set up. (we recommend parental guidance here, as you will be interacting with strangers over the internet - please take appropriate precautions).

For full functionality, the EyeMine mod needs to be installed on the server as well as your own computer. However, you may find much of the functionality works regardless. To increase compatibility, turn on serverCompatibilityMode in the Advanced mod options (In Minecraft: Mods -> EyeMine -> Config -> Advanced options). This should fix attacking, but for placing blocks you'll need to use your own mouse control to perform left clicks.

Unfortunately EyeMine is not compatible with Minecraft Realms, since these do not use the Java Edition.
