The university has several interests for running metalcon which will be listed here.
First of all the university is not allowed to place a commercial product. Thus one requirement is to NOT earn money in any way.
All the content on the site should be compliant with regional laws. The university cannot violate copyright laws in any setting
The university should be neutral and not pushing any oppinion.
The main goal of the university is to do research. For that reason the platform must offer various opportunities to do research. The university gets the chance to own/provide exclusive content.
Obviously the social graph itself is an interesting data set to analyze. But to be honest similar data already exists.
Another research focus is on how to determine broken links whithin a social graph and how do they evolve. What behaviour can be supposed.
Researchers want to test their algorithms. That is why the interfaces need to be so clean that reasearches can always easyly integrate A/B tests or other ways of distributing several algorithms to solve a feature
Another reasearch topic that is of interest is benchmarking and understanding web architectures.
