The following short films show some of the capabilities of DERT. Click on the image to start the animation.


Remote Terrain

NASA orbiters offer intriguing views of the remote landscapes of our solar system. Mars and Lunar orbiters as well as Earth satellites and space shuttle missions provide elevation data and orthoimagery. Below is an animation created in DERT of terrain reconstructed from data acquired from the HiRISE on Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, LOLA and LROC instruments on Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, the space shuttle SRTM mission, and Landsat 8.

Victoria Crater

DERT enables the user to navigate, measure, and place landmarks in remote terrain. Below is an animation demonstrating some of these features in Victoria Crater, Mars.

Candor Chasma

DERT employs the SPICE toolkit provided by JPL's Navigation and Ancillary Information Facility (NAIF) to enable the user to simulate shadows on remote terrain. Below is an animation demonstrating shadows in Candor Chasma, Mars.

Linne Crater

DERT provides elevation contouring with an interactive color map, allowing users to adjust contours. Below is an animation demonstrating this feature and the computation of a volume of material surrounding Linne Crater, Moon.

Terra Cimmeria

DERT provides layer opacity adjustment for viewing multiple layers concurrently. Below is an animation demonstrating two examples of this feature: first CRISM inferred chloride deposits are viewed with the ortho-image for Terra Cimmeria, Mars. Second, elevation values (red) are viewed concurrently with a slope values (green).

Lunar South Pole

DERT provides a simulated artificial light that can be positioned interactively. This feature, used along with surface shading and variable layer opacity can enhance detail sometimes difficult to see in an ortho-image. Below is an animation demonstrating this capability with a reconstructed terrain of the Lunar south pole.

Arabia Terra

DERT provides several interactive terrain analysis tools including a profile, a cutting plane, and a camera. Below is an animation demonstrating these tools with a reconstructed terrain of the Arabia Terra, Mars.

Gale Crater

Given a GeoJSON file, DERT will draw LineStrings and Points referenced to a terrain. Below is an animation with reconstructed terrain of the MSL landing site at Mount Sharp in Gale Crater, Mars demonstrating this capability as well as a search feature for these objects.

Grand Canyon

This animation demonstrates the DERT path tool and its fly feature. Once a path has been created in DERT, the user may record an image sequence traversing the path. In this segment, we traverse a path through the Grand Canyon.
