OpenLayers 6: call for funding, last call

The Openlayers Development Association1 asked the OpenLayers core developers to publish the following:

The OpenLayers Development Association successfully launched a fundraising campaign in December 2018 to improve the vector tiles rendering performances in Openlayers. The sums raised were impressive! A big thank you to the community for its financial commitment!

The list of contributors is available on the OpenLayers Wiki.

The current technical results are very interesting and tests carried out in the real world on Swisstopo’s national geoportal demonstrate that the targeted performance improvements have been achieved. You can also benefit from this work by testing OpenLayers master!

In order to use the full potential of the Mapbox Vector Tiles, complementary work in the ol-mapbox-style library is necessary, aiming at style rendering parity between Mapbox and OpenLayers. This is a necessary step towards a smooth cartographic workflow and interoperable vector tiles data and map representations.

The community is currently working on preparing the OpenLayers 6 release, which is scheduled for late March. This would be a great opportunity to present the results at the next FOSS4G NA, held from April 15 to 18.

In this last call for funding, we would like to give you a chance to participate in this successful endeavour and be a proud supporter of OpenLayers. The funds collected will be used to prepare the release, work on the styles, organize a community code sprint, and work on topics identified by the PSC such as:

  • Add type checking,
  • Rework the test suite,
  • New api documentation
  • New website The funds will support interested developers to join the effort and become part of a larger community.

The OpenLayers core developers would like to thank the Openlayers Development Association for organizing this effort, and all backers for their contributions.
