Visit us at plainlicense.org for all the details!
Plain License is an initiative to rewrite popular software and creative licenses in plain, approachable language. Our goal is to make common licenses easy to understand for an average person with no legal background. We seek to recraft licenses in a way that is accessible, clear, and concise while maintaining the legal integrity and enforceability of the original licenses.

- Apache 2.0 (Apache 2.0 ~16% of all projects on GitHub*)
- A scaffolding proprietary license
- GPL 3.0 (12% of all projects on GitHub)
- GPL 2.0
- BSD 3-Clause
- FSL 1.1
- MIT-0
(The most popular license on GitHub is the MIT, which we already have! ~46% of all projects on GitHub use the MIT license in 2024).
We provide our licenses as-is. Consult with an attorney before using any license for a project (and let us know how that goes). The author, @bashandbone, is not an attorney. He's just a human who wants to make licenses more accessible for everyone.
