The Chamilo software is provided as Free Software under the terms of the GNU/GPLv3+ licence (see https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-3.0.en.html) by the Chamilo Association ("We").

This software is developed in such a way that it provides the implementer (the organization or individual who hosts the software) with full control over the data treated by the application.

As such, there is not data treated by the Chamilo software developers or editors, to the exception of:

  • non-identifiable statistical data regarding the level of use of the software (IP address of the server, name of the portal, URL of the portal, default language, number of users, number of courses, number of sessions, use of plugins). This data collection happens when loading the main administration page and checking for a new version of Chamilo. It can be disabled through simple code changes (as many do).
  • optional identifiable information sent to us by the person installing the software, during the installation process (and only then)

We store both of these types of information on the Chamilo Association's infrastructure. It is accessible by the (bi-annually elected) board of directors of the association for the generation of reports and the contact of portal managers regarding events of interest. The Chamilo Association is responsible for the handling of this information by its board of directors.

At the Chamilo Association, we care deeply about users data privacy. This is why:

  • Chamilo requires very little personal information to create a user account
  • the information is stored in a database (which the implementer can secure in a number of ways)
  • we try our best not to publish any personal information by default through the software (options need to be changed in the software by the implementer to enable publishing)
  • no advertisements are run inside the software, which removes the data privacy concern regarding this point. However, ads could be added by any implementer.
  • no external web tracker/analytics is used by default in the software. However, external web tracker/analytics could be added by the implementer.

If you believe you have found any flaw regarding this policy in our software, please register an issue at https://github.com/chamilo/chamilo-lms/issues to let us know!
