At a thrift store, I discovered one of my greatest finds to date: a fully working IBM Wheelwriter 1000.

The IBM Wheelwriter is IBM's "last great typewriter". It is the end of the line for typewriter evolution before computers forever confined them to obsolescence, with major word processing features that you wouldn't expect to see in a typewriter:

Parallel/GPIO PC Printer Option

Apparently the IBM Wheelwriter Series has an optional Parallel Port, allowing it to be used as a daisywheel printer.

Open-Source Hardware

  • Libreboot/Coreboot
  • HPLIP Printers - A massive family of common and cheap printers, that you can probably find from the junkyard. Most of them use open source drivers, and all work out of the box with Linux and HPLIP. Great for printing Bitcoin paper wallets.
