Get started playing
If you have already installed everything according to the Installation guide, then you are ready to play Minecraft.
- Open the Minecraft launcher by double-clicking the Minecraft icon on your desktop.
- Log in using your Minecraft account details if prompted
- Make sure the big green PLAY button lists "EyeMine v2" - if not, select using the small arrow next to the "PLAY" or "PLAY DEMO" button
- Click PLAY (or "PLAY DEMO") to launch minecraft
- Once Minecraft has finished loaded, click the Maximise button on the top right of the window.
- Make sure your eye tracker is connected and switched on
- Open EyeMine by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
- Select the "Minecraft Intro" keyboard.
If you've bought Minecraft already, you can jump right into a Creative world:
In the Minecraft window, click "Single player". Select the world you want to play and click "Play selected world". We recommend the first time you play in the included "Starter world".
If you're using the demo version you'll need to select "Play Demo World" instead. This is a Survival world, which means you can't fly, and after some time night will arrive with monsters. You can reset the demo world at this point to continue trying out the basic controls - but once you buy Minecraft you'll get full access to Creative worlds, which are generally more beginner-friendly.
- The first thing you should try is looking around the Minecraft world. In the EyeMine keyboard, select "Look with Gaze", then look at the Minecraft window. Your viewpoint should follow your gaze. Select "Walk" and look back at the game - your character will start moving where you look.
- At this point you will probably want to adjust the speed that your viewpoint changes, and maybe your walking speed. You can do this via the "Settings" keyboard as shown in the video above, or if you're assisting a use you can use the (left/right/up/down) arrow keys on a physical keyboard to change the settings. You only need to do this the first time - once you are happy with the speed Minecraft will remember your preference.
- If your viewpoint is changing incorrectly, please check your eye tracker's calibration and re-calibrate if necessary.
- Note: Minecraft will only respond to gaze if you are looking somewhere within the Minecraft window. If you get stuck looking at the ground, look towards the top of the Minecraft window to drag your gaze upwards, or vice versa. If you look above or below the Minecraft window, nothing will happen.
- Now try mining with "Mine", attacking an animal with "Attack", or flying with "Fly" (note that you can't fly in the Demo World)
- When you've finished playing with EyeMine, turn off 'Look with Gaze' and press the Escape key on a physical keyboard to pause Minecraft
- Close the Minecraft window
- Close EyeMine by right-clicking on the EyeMine keyboard and selecting "Quit", or by selecting "Quit" using eye gaze
- If you are having no trouble with selecting the large EyeMine buttons on the Intro keyboard, try out the "Minecraft Intermediate" keyboard for more actions.
- If you want to continue using large buttons, first get super comfortable with how it works and then move onto the "Intro++" keyboard which has extra pages which allow you to build.
As a grown-up you may find yourself guiding the user towards specific goals in Minecraft too quickly. Minecraft is a "sandbox" game, with no single goal - the main appeal is that it provides an open-ended world to explore. Some of our users love to fly around and find as many different animals as possible. Others like to dig down to find caverns and lava. Some might look for villages and go on a destructive rampage. These are all legitimate ways to play the game and can provide hours of independent entertainment. Other users may go on to play in Survival mode, construct elaborate structures or learn to program with Redstone - that's great too! Minecraft has something to offer everyone.
