Goals

We should consider meeting the requirements of an Open Standard as defined by the Document Freedom initiative. See https://documentfreedom.org/openstandards.en.html.

The following specifications may be used as a point of reference.

• vanilla-flavored Markdown

• http://commonmark.org (its main shortcoming is that it only provides examples instead of an unambiguous specification of the syntax)

• GitHub-flavored Markdown (based on CommonMark spec)

• Markua (Leanpub)

Change requests to consider

• forward slashes for italic /italic/ (constrained), //i//talic (unconstrained)
