This is a checklist to help you run StoryLab Academy trainings in different J-schools and Newsrooms, from the first contact, to how to log in your training & training impact / results. Feel free to seek further clarifications from any of the Academy team on Slack: @muthoni (Marketing/Comm.s/Campaigns/Outreach), @Kwasi (Hacks/Hackers), @soilakenya (Universities), @nananduati (Agreements, Contracts, MoUs, Newsrooms).

TRAINING CHECKLIST:

Before a training:

  1. Identify Partners

Identify prospective partner newsrooms and J-schools in your city.

  • The newsrooms and journalism schools should have adequate numbers to justify a training. Tier 1 journalism schools can provide upto 300 students, while Tier 2 J-Schools provide upto 150 students.
  • Update the Newsrooms and J-Schools information on the corresponding links.
  • Create a compelling case for a potential partner to share with the institution that align the Academy’s values with the partner’s mission, vision, audiences, and challenges.
  1. MOUs and Contracts
  • Update all relevant information on the Newsroom Partnership MOU or J-School Partner letter
  • Share the updated documents with the CfA Academy Programme Manager: lillian@codeforafrica.org (@nananduati on Slack) for review.
  • Share the MOU or Partner letter with the Newsroom or JSchool and include a training schedule to finalize of the partnership.
  1. Training Planning Checklist
  1. Identify goals and objectives for the training
  2. Identify learning tools from the curriculum and activities.
  3. Date: pin down the best date for all trainees.
  4. Add your training to the gCal.Send event details to Kwasi Gachie on Slack (@kwasi) using this format: [event / activity] | [programme] | [organisation] (location) (date & time)
  5. Venue: identify and confirm a convenient venue for the training
  6. Trainers: identify and invite trainers to participate in the event.
  7. Budget: create a draft budget for the event
  8. Partners: identify and reach out to partners who can support the training.
  1. Marketing and Social Media
  • RSVPs: Send a formal invite to the target attendees and include this RSVP form
  • Social Media Cards: The Academy team has made available the following to ensure that you have the tools needed to get started on visibility that helps create traction and momentum for the [CITY] Academy. You can use the free tool Adobe Spark, to edit the social media cards #StoryLabAcademy: Share the event’s details including the registration form on Slack, Twitter and Facebook using the hashtag #StoryLabAcademy Reminders: Send email event reminders two days to the training and on the day of the training.
  1. Review Training Content

From our experience hosting digital/data journalism skills training around the world, we’ve found that using local examples such as local data sets, works best to ensure the training is localised and participants are able to participate and can relate to the training content. Before the training, review these Training decks to add more local examples, and case studies.

During the training

1. Training / Workshop Registration: In order to ensure we’re capturing standard information about all our participants, please use this RSVP form to capture data on any pieces of training/workshops or academy activities.

2. Marketing / Social Media Outreach During the training, encourage participants to share the experience and photos on social media with the hashtag #StoryLabAcademy. Capture activity photos which highlight the training activities.

3. Feedback Use this form to collect feedback on the training

After a training

Congratulations on a successful training!

Training Log Form: Update this Training log. This helps us to track all Academy events as well as put together and respond to any feedback. Training Photos: Create a folder with the training details here and upload photostaken during the training. Thank You notes: Send thank you notes to the attendees and include a link to the medium post about the event, photos and any other training resources relevant to the attendees. Training Write-up: Write blog post to be published on the Code for Africa Medium publication.
