This is still very much "work in progress". But wanted to open the PR to make this visible.

The goal of this PR is to introduce the Alembic database migration framework which should make it easier to handle database schema changes in future.

I still believe that using a database migration framework would be a significant improvement. But I definitely have no time to pursue this. So if there is nobody who likes to adopt this - yes; let's close it.

I'm not familiar enough with alembic to take on what you started unfortunately.

I would close it again.. but if you think leaving it open is better I'm also fine. But wouldn't an issue be more appropriate?
