Our Mission

Medic is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charity that builds and deploys free and open-source software that helps health workers deliver equitable doorstep care for everyone. We serve as technical steward of the Community Health Toolkit (CHT).

CHT

Our Work 🤝

The CHT provides a high-quality open-source framework for developers to build apps for health workers to provide better care in their communities. It's a collection of free and open-source technologies; open-access design, technical, and implementer resources; and a community of practice. As technical steward, Medic's focus is to build and support the CHT as a global public good; partner with Ministries of Health, NGOs, and technical organizations to design, deploy, and scale digital health apps powered by the CHT; and advance R&D for precision global health.

The CHT supports the unique needs of a given health system, and can be used by Community Health Workers, frontline supervisors, facility-based nurses, health system managers, and even patients and caregivers. Community Health Workers use tools built on the CHT to provide maternal care, assessments and treatment for sick children, malnutrition screening and treatment, and care for infectious and non-communicable diseases. CHT apps support many languages; run offline; work with basic phones, smartphones, tablets, and computers; and support integrated, doorstep primary care.

Kenya

Apps powered by the CHT now support more than 41,000 frontline health workers in over 15 countries in Africa and Asia as they perform over 22 million caring activities each year.

We envision a world where community health workers are trained, supervised, paid, and equipped with well-designed technology as they provide timely, high-quality, equitable, and affordable care for their neighbors. We believe empowering community health workers with sophisticated technology is an effective solution to achieve a more just world where universal health coverage is a reality, and health is a secured human right.

How You Can Get Involved 👋

Anyone can get involved by contributing their time, skills, and resources to help more people get access to healthcare. We are all health workers.

If you can write code, donate, or provide unique expertise, you will stand in solidarity with health workers delivering care to their hardest-to-reach neighbors.

To further participate in our community, sign up for our newsletter, join our forum, and follow us on social media @ Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn. We also operate a phone donation and recycling program. Millions of phones are thrown away each year—even more are hiding away in drawers. Give your phone new life and help communities around the world.

@medic

We recognize that the need for free and open-source tools like ours is too great and no single organization can meet the needs of underserved communities on its own. We see success as the ability for others to build upon our tools and improve access to healthcare in some of the world’s hardest-to-reach places. Your sponsorship supports this long-term vision for the Community Health Toolkit to exist as a shared, collaborative global public good.
