Hello π
I've been doing software consulting and development for more than 10 years now. For all of this time, my work has been focused on creating and improving free, libre and open source software.
Sometimes, I was contracted to work on it and I made a point of contributing the code back to the community.
Sometimes, I did it of my own accord without being paid for it.
Taking part in open source projects made me realize that we truly are standing on the shoulders of giants. Were it not for thousands of others' selfless contributions to important foundational projects, the software world as we know it could not have existed.
GitHub itself is also like this, depending on a web of open source software spanning decades of effort and countless acts of code kindness.
Unfortunately, as I get older, the world gets crazier and responsibilities amass it is ever harder to find time for contributing to open source which brings me sincere joy.
While I am still being contracted to work on open source projects from time to time, this is subject to market conditions and so it comes and goes like the seasons. π βοΈ πΈ π
Sponsoring me will allow me to be more independent in my open source-focused work and evaluate my next contributions based on what the world needs more of, rather than what it is ready to pay for. I think I do not need to tell you that unfortunately more often than not, these two are at odds with each other.
It would also be a token of inspiration for the moral choice to contribute to open source. Even if you contribute $1 or something it will keep me warm inside for years. In that sense, it is a very energy efficient action. And what is energy efficient is good for the planet. π π π
So, even if it is a small thing to give, it is a significant thing to receive, because the cause it goes toward is infinitely compassionate. βΈοΈ
