*************** Readme: joint generator-player optimization in multi-agent environments***************

Overview & current progress #####

This is an ongoing project that builds on Neural MMO, an open-ended, artificial life-like environment for multi-agent reinforcement learning (original Readme below). It seeks to implement a training loop that jointly optimizes player(s) and map-generator(s). At present, it uses the original NMMO setup to train RL policies to play as selfish agents (with negative reward for dying, usually learning to forage for food and water, and sometimes fight one another), while simultaneously evolving a population of maps using the MAP-Elites quality diversity algorithm. (We plan to supplant direct optimization of the maps with optimization of map-generators in the near future, where these generators can be implemented as neural networks, like NCAs or generative CPPNs, or similar.)

While agents are always trained to survive, maps can be optimized to induce certain behavior in the players during learning, including:

  • Maximum lifespan (resulting in trivially easy/prosperous maps)
  • Maximum diversity in skill-space (resulting in a variety of niches demanding specialized behaviors)

The following map-generator objectives are in development or not yet implemented:

  • Maximum homogeneity among agents (implemented, untested)
  • Maximum discrepancy of success between two distinct, learning player-policies (implemented, untested)
  • Maximum learning progress among players after several updates (implemented, likely requires more learning on each map, potentially computationally infeasible)
  • Mixed success among agents, indicative of maps that are neither too hard nor too easy for the current policy (not implemented)

Installation #######

Either simply clone this repository, including its submodules (this will download the NMMO Unity client (which may take a while), for rendering gameplay): :: git clone --recurse-submodules -j8 https://github.com/smearle/neural-mmo

Mac OS X m1 / Apple silicon **********

Having the wrong version of tensorflow installed will result in a fatal SIGILL (Illegal instruction) error. You can verify this by opening a python console and attempting to import tensorflow.

You will need to follow Apple's instructions (https://developer.apple.com/metal/tensorflow-plugin/) for installing tensorflow.

venv Based Installation ************************

Clone repository: :: git clone --recursive https://github.com/smearle/neural-mmo

Create `venv`: :: python3 -m venv --python=<PATH TO PYTHON 3.8> nmmo-env # You can use default python version by dropping --python source nmmo-env/bin/activate

Install bazel: https://docs.bazel.build/versions/4.2.1/install.html (For mac at least)

Install dependencies: :: pip3 install -r scripts/requirments.txt

Training ####

The file evo_batch.py runs batches of experiments by iterating through hyperparameters and calling ForgeEvo.py, either sequentially on a local machine, or by queueing batches of parallel experiments on a SLURM cluster. You can run it with: :: python evo_batch.py --local

(dropping the --local argument if you're on a cluster).

If you are attempting to use a GPU (recommended) and you encounter an IndexError in ray/rllib/policy/torch_policy.py when attempting to set self.device, replace the lign assigning gpu_ids in this file with: :: gpu_ids = [0]

To determine what batch of experiments will be run, (un)comment the appropriate hyperparameters listed in evo_batch.py. We discuss these hyperparamters below.

Experiments will be saved to evo_experiment/EXPERIMENT_NAME.

Visualization #####

To save maps as .pngs and plot the fitness of the map-generator over time, run: :: python evo_batch.py --local --vis_maps

These will be saved to evo_experiment/EXPERIMENT_NAME, with maps inside the "maps" directory.

Rendering #####

The Unity client for rendering gameplay should have been downloaded as a submodule during installation. Verify that you can run the executable: :: ./neural-mmo-client/UnityClient/neural-mmo-resources.x86_64

If you're somehow missing this executable (but do see the file neural-mmo-client/UnityCient/neural-mmo.x86_64, for example), you might need to cd into the neural-mmo-client submodule and pull from the mining_woodcutting branch directly: :: cd neural-mmo-client git pull origin mining_woodcutting

Once the Unity client is running, you can evaluate a policy on a map, using Forge.py as described in the NMMO documentation, and/or using the additional arguments --MODEL and --MAP to specify the location of the trained player model and a map (as an .npy file), which can be found inside evo_experiment/EXPERIMENT_NAME/[models/maps].

Perhaps more simply, you can render trained agents and maps over a set of experiments using the hyperparameters in evo_batch.py, run: :: python evo_batch.py --local --render

This will automatically launch both the Unity client and a server with the model/map from the experiment with the correct hyperparameters. To stop rendering the current experiment and move onto the next, enter "ctrl+c" to send a KeyboardInterrupt.

Evaluation #####

To evaluate trained agents and maps: :: python evo_batch.py --local --evaluate

This may take a while, and evaluations can also be run in parallel on SLURM. Evaluation generates various stats/visualizations pertaining to individual generator-player pairs. When evaluations are run in sequence, after all evaluations are complete, These results will be compiled into a heatmap that compares the performance of different generator-player pairs. To re-generate these visualizations using previously-generated evaluation data (e.g. when these evaluations were run in parallel), run: :: python evo_batch.py --local --evaluate --vis_cross_eval

Evaluation data and visualizations are saved to eval_experiment.

Hyperparameters #######

genomes

How map-generators are represented. Each genome defines an individual that implemente gen_map() and mutate(). At the beginning (and/or throughout generator optimization), the genome is initialized randomly, corresponding to some random map, then cloned and mutated, with each mutation (generally) leading to some change in the map produced by the individual's map-generation function.
