Recent Projects

Seismica Journal (2021- )

Summary
Seismica is a new Diamond Open Access Journal launching in Spring 2022.

  • Founding Open Science Editor; responsible for promoting and adapting open science, data access and inclusive workflows.

Geoscience Open Educational Resources (OER) Study (2020-2021)

Summary
This study examines the creation and adoption of OER in the Geosciences with a goal of providing guidance for institutions, libraries and librarians who support and fund OER initiatives. An environmental scan, employed to identify and characterize available college-level OER in this discipline, provided a baseline for the study. Analysis of the scan along with a review of OER, textbook and field guide standards informs a new set of proposed guidelines for Geoscience OER, and offers a call for community feedback.

Earth Science Citation Replication Project (2019-2020)

Summary
This project had three objectives:

  • Replicate methods from P. White's 2019 study of Earth Science researcher citation practices.
  • Calculate programmatically whether researchers in Earth Science rely on a smaller subset of literature than estimated by the 80/20 rule (note: The 80/20 rule states that 80% of publications cite just 20% of the literature).
  • Determine whether these reproducible citation analysis methods can be used to analyze open access uptake.

We also set out to "walk the walk" and employ the same research workflows as librarians that students, faculty and researchers we support confront in their work.
