The aarch64 packages are uploaded for the maintained distros:

  • Centos 7
  • Centos 8
  • Ubuntu Bionic
  • Ubuntu Focal
  • Debian Buster

Although the Centos packages are uploaded, compared to the amd64 binaries, it requires libprotobuf as a dependency. @srh is this something we want to mitigate?

FTR: For building the packages the protobuf-devel package was used over the fetched one as the fetched protobuf version does not support aarch64.

I added "Update build system dependencies to later versions (even if not necessary)" to #6975.

After we do that we need to revisit this issue.

I initially avoided updating the protobuf version, when updating other package versions, because we had previously made patches for Visual Studio. If it doesn't support aarch64 though, I guess the protobuf version should be updated, and the Visual Studio patches can be redeveloped later if they're still necessary.

I have updated the protobuf version in #7032 simply for the ARM support.

Despite that, I think it would be okay for all packages to dynamically link libprotobuf, as they will be with libcurl and openssl.
