I am concerned about the rakudo star packages listed here https://rakudo.org/star

My immediate concerns are:

  • the macOS version is stuck at 2020.04 (4 years old version)
  • the Linux version requires a build from source

A typical newbie journey is like this:

  • raku.org --- raku is not the implementation, go to rakudo.org
  • rakudo.org --- rakudo is the compiler, but better to have a bundle, choose Rakudo Star
  • rakudo.org/star --- installation fails (yes the macOS version fails even to install 2020.04 since it is not Apple Silicon compatible)

So, while I applaud the idea of Star bundle, I think that it is "one distro too many" and we, the community, should retire it and focus efforts on a smaller set of rock solid options for newbies

Please do comment if you would like to restore Star to an effective option - I would love to hear the plan. Meantime, I propose we remove this option from the main rakudo.org menu.

Thumbs up from me on removal. A smaller bundle with just zef that is up to date everywhere seems a better option to me.
