OpenEEW is A low-cost, open source, IoT-based earthquake early warning system. This project is a Call for Code® with The Linux Foundation project initially created by Grillo.

Earthquake Early-Warnings

Earthquake Early-Warning systems (EEWs) provide rapid detection of earthquakes and alerting of people and infrastructure at risk. The warnings can arrive seconds to minutes before strong shaking is felt, giving people sufficient time to protect themselves.

The alerts can also trigger automatic systems that stop elevators, prepare backup power, turn off gas pipes, and more. However only several EEWs exist in the world due to the very high cost of sensors, infrastructure, and technology development.

OpenEEW

We are building technology to detect the earliest signs of an earthquake and issue alerts. The technology could provide people critical time to seek cover or exit buildings before shaking arrives.

OpenEEW is a growing project. We need volunteers to install sensors, start networks in seismically vulnerable regions, and contribute to the next generation of OpenEEW technology.

OpenEEW diagram

OpenEEW brings together several technologies to achieve rapid and accurate alerts:

  • A low-cost seismometer featuring an ESP32 microcontroller, a high-performance ADXL355 accelerometer, and alarm LEDS/buzzer
  • Mobile app for provisioning the sensor
  • Kubernetes cluster that includes an MQTT broker with micro-services that subscribe and transform data
  • Seismology algorithms to rapidly detect and characterize an earthquake
  • Dashboard for monitoring devices and earthquake events

OpenEEW dashboard

You can access the public dashboard here:

https://dashboard.openeew.com

You will be able to:

  • See the global network of OpenEEW sensors
  • See earthquakes detected by the community
  • Manage your owned devices in the network

Connect a Sensor

If you have a sensor and are ready to connect to the OpenEEW network, start here.

Contribute to OpenEEW

We welcome everyone who wants to add or improve the technology. Please find out more here.

History

This Linux Foundation project was founded by Grillo, with support from USAID, IBM, AWS, and Arrow Electronics.

Community

We use Slack as our main communication channel. Here we discuss issues arising from open source development of each component, as well as share news and ideas. You can join here.

We also use GitHub Projects to manage 'sprints' as we work towards specific goals. This includes for example our implementation of OpenEEW for Puerto Rico.

Every 2 weeks we hold a video townhall meeting to discuss OpenEEW issues and roadmap. It's normally at 3pm US Eastern Time for one hour. You can add this event to your calender here:

Alternatively, you can simply join at the right time using this meeting link: https://meet.google.com/kxv-vzdo-oyc
