patch-ac2-data v1

This is a small python script to allow you do replace data in the Asheron's Call 2 data files. It is intended to make skinning the UI easier.

Requirements

This uses Python, so you need that installed. I use Mac OS X, but you can download installers for windows at http://python.org/download/. You should use the 32-bit version of 2.7.x -- 2.7.5 is the current version.

This also requires the Python Image Library, currently version 1.1.7. You can download an installer for Windows at http://www.pythonware.com/products/pil/. You need to get the version for Python 2.7.

Both of these should install without issues.

Usage

If anything goes wrong, this will probably corrupt your data file, so be sure you keep a copy of your original data files before using this!

From the command line, in the directory that you've put the python script, just run patch-ac2-data.py to see if that works -- it'll print some usage instructions:

patch-ac2-data.py

patch-ac2-data.py v1

Usage: patch-ac2-data.py

First of all, be sure to BACK UP your data files. If anything goes wrong they'll
likely be left in an unusable state!

Run this from the directory that contains the Asheron's Call 2 data files.

<patch directory> is the path to the directory that contains the replacement images,
and the patch.txt file. This text file has commands, one per line, case sensitive:

'datafile <path>' -- switch to patching the data file at <path>
       'replace <identifer> <filename>' -- replace the <identifier> (specified as hex without a
leading 0x) with the image in <filename>

The first argument to the script is a name of a directory containing the patch. The directory simply has a file, patch.txt, that says what to do, as well as the images/data that it is replacing. The 'example1' is an example of this.

You'll need to know the identifiers of the files you want to replace. I have an archive of all the extracted images, so that you can find the image you want to replace. You can download this archive at http://stevenygard.com/download/ac2/ac2-images-2013-01-23.zip. This is big, over 5 gigabytes! The identifier is part of the filename.

Examples

I'll try to put up the following examples:

  • Replace difficulty map with portal map route.
  • Non-transparent radar
  • Non-transparent left-side window (map, examine)
  • Non-transparent right side window (skills, quests)
  • Shorter mining result messages
  • Osteth terrain grid textures, show lines every 0.1 radar units, to help with mining
  • Map hero titles back to class names, so you don't have to look them up in a chart all the time
  • Non-camouflaged cursor
