Introducing bell.plus

Nicolas Chan edited this page Aug 16, 2018 · 5 revisions

The creators of bell.lahs.club and countdown.zone bring you bell.plus, the final home for Bell! We hope that the new and shorter bell.plus name is easier to remember and better suits the website's use case. We also plan on creating stickers for Bell (and giving them away for free), so be on the lookout for those coming up!

Transitioning to the new domain

Since we've changed the domain, there are a few things you'll have to do:

  • You may need to re-enter any theme settings or custom periods/schedules. We apologize for any inconvenience and this should not need to be done again in the future.
  • Chrome extension users will need to update the extension. If the extension was automatically updated, you'll need to grant it permissions for bell.plus by clicking the Chrome menu in the top right. You can also manually update by visiting chrome://extensions, enable "Developer Mode" (top right corner), and then click "Update" (top menu bar).

We apologize for any inconvenience. We don't plan on changing the domain again, so you shouldn't need to do any of these things again.

Improvements

While we have chosen to keep the design the same for the most part, there are a few minor changes in this new release:

  • School names now show up in the URL (for example, bell.plus/lahs for LAHS). This makes it easier to link to a specific school bell countdown.
  • Better mobile support (especially for iOS). Try "Add to Homescreen" from the mobile browser to save Bell as an app on your phone's homescreen.
  • Loading time optimizations. The smaller code footprint means it should load faster.

Suggestions?

If you have any feedback, we're happy to hear it!

Thanks

  • The schedules for LAHS are maintained by the LAHS Hack Club.
  • Bell is primarily developed by LAHS alumni nicolaschan and noloerino.
  • The Chrome Extension was originally developed by noloerino as part of his senior project.
  • As an open source project, the developers volunteer their time to improve the website. We also personally cover the costs of hosting and domain registration. All we hope is that this is something that is useful for students and teachers.
