Matchmaker

Seller to buyer matching algorithm.

Running the application

The application can be run by invoking main.py directly. It is compatible with both python 2 and python 3.

Running the application will print an admittedly hard to read printout of each seller, along with an indented list below consisting of all of it's matched buyers, ranked accordingly. The weight of the match will be listed at the beginning of each buyer's row.

You can see the full output for each of the three implementations here:

  • Default - Geography and industry weighted equally
  • Geography Only - Only geography taken into account for ranking, industry ignored
  • Industry Only - Only industry taken into account for ranking, geography ignored

Ranking Algorithm

There are a handful options for determining how matches are ranked. This is accomplished by weighing geography id matches and industry matches separately. Those weights can be adjusted in order to tweak the end ranking as needed.

My ranking algorithm is as such:

((number of geography_id matches - geography_id misses) * geography_weight) + ((number of industry_id matches - industry_id misses) * industry_weight)

The general theory is that the more geography_ids and industry_ids that a buyer and seller have in common, the better fit they will be. We then dock the matched pair for each id that it does not have in common. The reason for this is to get the best match possible. If a buyer is an exact match for a seller, they should be ranked above a buyer than simply has a huge number of ids they are looking for.

The geography weight and the industry weight can be adjusted independently in order to further tweak the rankings as needed.

Different matchers have been implemented in the matcher module to show the altering of the weights. These matchers are not run by default. main.py can be updated to run with different matchers.

Note: Ranking only comes into play when a buyer and seller have been matched, which requires at least one common geography_id and one common industry_id.

One of the largest drawbacks of my choice of algorithm is the fact that so many matches end up with the same ranking. As is, rankings for matches with the same value are non-deterministic. Being non-deterministic when ranking is not ideal. If a seller sees that the order of the rankings that they are shown changes, then they would be less likely to trust the ranking. To mitigate this, I would find a simple, deterministic way of ordering matches with the same ranking, such as alphabetically by the id.

Running tests

The (minimal) tests can be run via pytest.

If you don't have pytest installed, it can be installed via pip.
