What is Homebrew?

Homebrew (brew) is a free and open-source package manager for macOS that enables users to install apps and software based on their preferences. It has been recommended because of its ease of use and effectiveness in saving time and effort.

Prerequisites

  • You should have some familiarity with the MacOS Terminal application since you’ll need to use it to install Homebrew.

  • The Terminal application is located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder.

  • You will need to install one other piece of software before you can install Homebrew:

    • Xcode Command-Line Tools: You can check if they are already installed by running the following command:

      xcode-select --install

If the Command Line Tools are not installed, a pop-up window will appear asking you to install them. Follow the prompts to complete the installation.

Install Homebrew

Once the Command Line Tools are installed, you can install Homebrew by running the following command in the terminal:

ruby -e "$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)"

This will download and run the Homebrew installation script. Follow the instructions you'll see in the terminal explaining what you need to do to complete the installation process.

You can learn more about Homebrew installation at the Homebrew website.
