Trouble sending email

For some of us sending email doesn't work and it can be difficult to figure out why. Note: there is a separate page for Issues using Gmail SMTP.

Potential Cause #1

When using an SMTP mail provider with HTTPS you may encounter the following error:

Error: 'connection encountered an error'

This is fairly cryptic. At the time of writing we added some debugging to response.js inside of the emailjs module and found that the actual error was:

"SMTPError 5 err: Error: self signed certificate in certificate chain"

Potential solution: Check if you are using an antivirus product like AVAST or Kaspersky that has HTTPS scanning enabled. Disable the HTTPS scanning in the antivirus program options and you should now be able to connect to your SMTP provider over HTTPS.
