The D-penicillman treatment is not effective in prolonging the survival of PBC patients.

50% of the studied patients are at risk of dying before ~ 9 years.

Age, edema, serum albumin and bilirubin concentrations, blood clotting time and histologic stage of disease are all important factors which affect the risk of death of PBC patients.

  • Age : Keeping other covariates constant, a unit increase in age results in a 3 % increase in the hazards of dying of primary biliary cirrhosis.

  • Edema : The risk of dying is 2.2 times [= exp(0.795 * 1)] higher for patients with severe Edema compared to patients with no Edema (i.e Edema = 0). Also, patients with mild Edema (i.e Edema = 0.5) have a 48% [exp(0.795 * 0.5) = 1.48] higher risk of dying compared to patients with no Edema.

  • Bili : Every unit increase in the logarithm of serum bilirubin concentration multiplies the risk of dying by a factor of 2.26.

  • Albumin : A drop in serum albumin level reveals a higher risk of death. In fact a unit drop in albumin concentration doubles the risk of death.

  • Protime and stage : Every unit increase in blood clotting time and stage of the disease increases the risk of dying by 29% and 34% respectively.
