Use lifecycle::is_present() for dealing with deprecated arguments

I'm just learning about lifecycle::is_present(). Might be worse applying the recommendations in the linked reference since we're already importing {lifecycle}. Yet to weigh the cons of this approach vs what we have implemented here. Definitely not a priority for v1.5.0 release.
