Can you explain how this works and maybe provide an example?
There already is an easy way to do landscape pages, for example in DataTableTest.java

//Create a landscape page
page.setMediaBox(new PDRectangle(PDRectangle.A4.getHeight(), PDRectangle.A4.getWidth()));
