Routine Database Maintenance

Install, Start, and Stop PostgreSQL

If this is your first install, automatically load on login with:

  mkdir -p ~/Library/LaunchAgents
  cp /usr/local/Cellar/postgresql/9.1.3/homebrew.mxcl.postgresql.plist ~/Library/LaunchAgents/
  launchctl load -w ~/Library/LaunchAgents/homebrew.mxcl.postgresql.plist

If this is an upgrade and you already have the homebrew.mxcl.postgresql.plist loaded:

  launchctl unload -w ~/Library/LaunchAgents/homebrew.mxcl.postgresql.plist
  cp /usr/local/Cellar/postgresql/9.1.3/homebrew.mxcl.postgresql.plist ~/Library/LaunchAgents/
  launchctl load -w ~/Library/LaunchAgents/homebrew.mxcl.postgresql.plist

Or start manually with:

  pg_ctl -D /usr/local/var/postgres -l /usr/local/var/postgres/server.log start

And stop with:

  pg_ctl -D /usr/local/var/postgres stop -s -m fast

##Create a Database Migration To add a column to a table, use database migrations. Generate a migration using the following with the appropriate table and column names:

  rails generate migration AddNumberOfEmployeesToCompanies number_of_employees:integer

The above command will create a file in db/migrate. Then migrate the db with:

  bundle exec rake db:migrate

The new column should now be in the db and model. More information on migrations can be found here.

Citizenry

Citizenry is a simple, friendly web application for communities to keep track of the people, companies, groups, and projects that make them great.

It was built to power http://epdx.org/, a guide to the awesome tech community of Portland, Oregon.

Requirements & Technical Details

Citizenry is written in Ruby 1.8.7, using Rails 3.

Using homebrew to install dependencies:

brew install mysql brew install sphinx brew install mysql-connector-c

Create YML Files

mv config/settings-sample.yml to settings.yml mv config/database.sample.yml to database.yml
