Complete the below when receiving a research request, and continue to add to this issue as you receive additional details and produce deliverables. Be sure to also add the appropriate project-level label to this issue (eg gtfs-rt, DLA).

Research Question

Ahead of the June 17 TTTF #4 meeting, make some adjustments to the GTFS Digest Portfolio pages. Publish the pages with the changes by end of May.

How will this research be used?

These visualizations will help give viewers an idea of the state of transit and help them make informed decisions on how to improve transit services.

Stakeholders & End-Users

  • TTTF
  • McKinsey
  • Caltrans
  • Other transit professionals and advocates

To do

Tiffany

  1. Add route_color to the list of columns to download.
  2. Download April 2024.

Amanda - To-Do

  1. Direction 0/1 is arbitrary. Add back in cardinal directions.
  2. Update charts with direction ids by cardinal direction.
  3. Route Maps: color routes with the route_colors officially specified by operators instead of a default color scale, if available.

Amanda - Done
6. Route Typology Chart: remove the subtitle. Add in a blurb from the methodology.md about how routes are categorized. Add a hyperlink to NACTO Route guide.
7. % RT Journey Chart with VP: delete
8. Total Monthly Scheduled Service Chart: delete
9. Speed Chart: use different colors. Red, green, and yellow suggest bad, good, and ok.
10. Frequency Chart: make the colors a set range, so all routes will always be dark green if a bus going that route and direction comes by every 10 minutes, dark red if every 60 minutes.
11. Spatial Accuracy: Confirm with Tiffany about buffer and add the buffer into the subtitle.
12. Service Hours: go back and download the data for April and October 2023. These are the two months that have an entire week's worth of data. Find the min. start_time of the trip and then aggregate routes based on this. Create 3 line charts, one for Saturday, one for Sunday, and one for the weekdays. X axis should be 0-24 for each hour of the day, Y is service hours. Shade the background to identify hours we consider AM Peak, Owl, etc.
