PetAppeal

Welcome to the PetAppeal repo! This repo contains codes that allow you to easily query, clean, and model data gathered from the Petfinder database. The ultimate aim of the PetAppeal project is to determine the factors leading to pet adoptions and help promote pet adoption in the United States.

Petfinder API

The Petfinder API lets users easily query the Petfinder database for animal shelter information, individual pet information, and breed information. A total of 10,000 requests can be made per day and a maximum of 1,000 records can be returned per request. To get started, you will need to request an API (https://www.petfinder.com/developers/api-docs). A csv of all shelters listed in the Petfinder database between November 22 and November 26, 2017 has been provided.

No Kill Network

The No Kill Network is an organization that promotes no kill animal shelters across the United States. A list of the no kill shelters in the U.S. was scraped from the No Kill Network website (https://www.nokillnetwork.org/) to elucidate the exact status of the individual animals, as both adopted and euthanized animals are listed as 'Removed' in the Petfinder database. The list of no kill shelters is provided in this repository; however, there is lots of missing information. Please feel free to comment if you have information that can update and complete this list.

Workflow

The general workflow for PetAppeal is 1) query to find animal shelters, 2) query to find pets, 3) clean the data, 4) visualize, and 5) model. Provided herein is a workflow that queries for pets using the No Kill Network list as a filter, which is ultimately used to predict adoption status, i.e., whether the animal is still in the shelter or has been adopted using a random forest classification model. The code is easily modifiable for use with other models and for other questions.

1) shelterFinder

This code is used to retrieve basic shelter information with the Petfinder API. The query function has two required parameters: the zip code of the shelter and a Petfinder API key, both as strings. The code will return a dataframe that lists the contact information for the shelter as well as the shelter ID, which is required to query for individual pets.

2) getPets

This code is used to retrieve information about individual animals available in the Petfinder database. The query function has two required parameters: 1) the animal shelter ID, which can be retrieved with shelterFinder and the Petfinder API key. It returns basic pet information (i.e., name, breed, size, etc.) and shelter contact information. It also contains a status for each animal, i.e., adopted, removed, pending, or on hold. These statuses can be used for supervised learning models.

3) Data munging & feature engineering

The dataset has some very straight-forward and clean features (e.g., animal type, animal size), but there are relatively few and some that require some cleaning up before modeling. This script cleans the necessary features as well as creates some new features. There are certainly more features that could be engineered; if you have an idea, let me know.

4) Data visualization

This portion of the script does not modify the data at all, but only views the data through various figures to get a better understanding of the dataset. This is truly a visual data exploration and may provide clues on how to proceed with the data. The following modeling script was performed on only cats and dogs (i.e., all other animals removed from dataset) based on the visualization alone, as there were substantially more cats and dogs than all other animals.

5) Modeling

Provided here is a script to perform a two-class (i.e., adopted versus available) random forest classification using a grid search cross validation. The random forest classifier was chosed for this specific dataset because of the large proportion of categorical features in the dataset.

Gotchas

There are few important things to consider when using the PetAppeal codes. First, since the PetFinder API wil return all shelters in a given zip code, and sometimes those in nearby zip codes, you must check your shelter list to ensure you have only the shelters you want. Another very important aspect of the Petfinder API is to remember that the status label 'X' includes both adopted and euthanized animals. If you plan to include animals from more than no kill shelters, some unsupervised learning may be required to segment the groups within this status. Furthermore, the Petfinder database does not track the changes in individual pet statuses, i.e., every time information about an animal is written, the previous entry is overwritten. Therefore, this data is not suitable for all types of modeling as is, e.g., regression. Currently, an EC2 instance is being setup to be able to query the database on (at least) a weekly basis, so that this data can be used to determine the duration of a given animal's stay in the shelter.
