External samples

In order to keep the codebase fresh and distribute changes across all variants, every new sample is based on an existing one. See Development branches - Dependencies for details. Merging changes is not trivial so we're keeping the number of official variants low. However, we encourage developers to create variants and host them in their own repositories.
