Comparative Study of KNN and Decision Tree Models for Predicting Students' Adaptability Level in Online Education

Objective:

The objective of this study is to compare the performance of K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) and Decision Tree models in predicting students' adaptability levels in online education. The study aims to analyze the effectiveness of these machine learning algorithms in classifying students based on various features related to their demographics, educational background, and online learning behavior.

Methodology:

  1. Data Preprocessing:

    • Handle missing values, if any.
    • Encode categorical features.
    • Split the dataset into training and testing sets.
  2. Model Training:

    • Train KNN and Decision Tree models on the training data.
  3. Model Evaluation:

    • Evaluate the performance of each model using metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-score.

    • Based on the results of this study, the Decision Tree model, particularly the one based on Entropy, emerges as the preferred choice for predicting students' adaptability levels in online education. It offers a good balance between performance, interpretability, and scalability.
  8. Future Directions:

    • Further research could explore ensemble methods such as Random Forests or Gradient Boosting, which combine multiple Decision Tree models to improve predictive performance.
