Thinking about this some more, I don't feel great about taking the liberty to change the photos that somebody else created. We would at least need to somehow indicate that the photos are no longer original, and have been edited.

Maybe a button to toggle between original and normalized would satisfy that concern?

Boosting the brightness also leads to clipping of detail in the whitest part of the image, so we might need to more carefully/manually change the brightness levels in the image to avoid this.
