GeoNode with stand-alone GeoWebCache?

Is there a way currently to configure GeoNode to use a stand-alone GeoWebCache (ie not the one integrated in Geoserver)? We're running a clustered Geoserver deployment with a shared GWC instance currently and would like GeoNode to benefit from the common cache.

I've gotten this to work with an interesting reverse proxy configuration -- not ideal but definitely the easiest at the moment. Not sure I'll find the time to write this up into a tutorial any time soon, but leaving this issue open in case I will find that time :-)
