These were the changes that @Kreef made locally for his development.
There are already two issues related to these changes:
#545 and #546

The changes should be made in these issues, and other issues should be created for the other changes.
This branch should not be merged back, but is only a way too temporarily save and view the requested functionality.

The actual implementation should be done in issues, and tests should be added or updated.
