After ‘really shocking’ LDP losses in Japan’s special elections, can Fumio Kishida survive as PM?

Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party suffered heavy defeats in weekend by-elections, signalling deep public discontent with Kishida’s leadership

The prime minister now faces mounting pressure amid calls for him to resign immediately – and a looming LDP presidency vote later this year

With an election for the party’s presidency set for September, analysts believe his rivals may begin to circle.

“He is in a very tough situation, and he is going to find it difficult to hang on,” said Hiromi Murakami, a political-science professor at the Tokyo campus of Temple University.

“The election result in Shimane prefecture was really shocking because that is meant to be one of the LDP’s heartlands,” she told This Week In Asia. “If the party cannot keep those sorts of seats, then you have to ask how he is going to turn this around.”

However, the party was more confident about retaining Shimane’s No. 1 district, a long-standing conservative bastion, where the special election was triggered by the death of Hiroyuki Hosoda, the former speaker of the lower house.

It then immediately demanded that the LDP call a general election on the grounds that it is impossible for it to bring about the political reforms that the nation requires.

Even more worrying for Kishida are the exit polls conducted by the Jiji Press news agency indicating 40 per cent of voters want him to step down immediately.

“It’s pretty clear that the public is very angry about these scandals, but also Kishida’s inability to decisively solve the party’s problems,” Murakami said, pointing out that while there had been some resignations from the party, other politicians caught up in the scandal had not been held accountable.

“Kishida’s public support rate is around 30 per cent now, and he is just being dragged down by everything that is happening, so it is up to him to do something if he wants to turn it around,” she said.

<img class="image-inline caption" src="https://cdn.i-scmp.com/sites/default/files/d8/images/canvas/2024/04/29/97fd45ae-e439-41c7-85ba-39b35f23521b_8652fbe8.jpg" data-fid="14995881" data-resolution="1" width="2000" height="1332" title="Kishida (centre) delivers a statement to parliament last month. Photo: AFP

Kishida does not have to call a general election until next year, but he will have to navigate the LDP presidency vote in the autumn. Potential challengers are currently keeping a low profile as they do not wish to be associated with the problems plaguing the party but, as September nears, they are likely to become increasingly visible.

Murakami explained that the ultimate goal would be for a potential successor to position themselves as a reformer intent on eliminating misconduct within the party. A snap general election could then be called to leverage any increase in support for this new leadership approach.

Kishida is certainly in deep trouble, but a challenge in September is by no means inevitable, according to Toshimitsu Shigemura, a politics professor at Tokyo’s Waseda University.

Kishida’s best hope is that he is able to pull a political surprise – a rabbit out of the hat, if you likeToshimitsu Shigemura, politics professor

“I think it’s possible that he may survive because I believe he wants to remain in power but, more importantly, I do not believe that anyone else in the party wants the position at the moment,” he said.

“Things are so bad with the party that whoever comes in next will have a difficult time fixing the problems … Kishida’s best hope is that he is able to pull a political surprise – a rabbit out of the hat, if you like – that is widely supported,” he added.

“If that is not possible, then he has to hope that in six months’ time people have mostly forgotten about all the scandals.”

There are signs that Kishida has been looking for a political victory – he travelled to Washington to address the US Congress earlier this month, and has reportedly authorised behind-the-scenes negotiations with North Korea to bring home Japanese abductees – but none of it appears to be swaying public opinion much.

Kishida among most unpopular Japanese prime ministers ever, polls show

Another tactic he may also attempt is forming a political alliance with Nippon Ishin No Kai, a conservative party from Osaka that has gained increasing political influence lately. However, this move would likely antagonise the LDP’s current electoral partner, the Buddhist-backed Komeito, and could trigger a rift within that alliance.

Yet the LDP looks likely to cling onto power regardless, Shigemura said, as even if it loses 50 seats in the next general election, a firm alliance with either Komeito or Ishin No Kai would almost certainly be enough for it to retain control.

Holiday in Afghanistan? The Taliban are working to woo tourists

Though still small in number, more foreign tourists are coming to Afghanistan

Head of the Tourism Directorate said the biggest foreign visitor market is China

Taliban fighters take selfies by the tomb of Afghan King Nadir Shah in Kabul, Afghanistan. Photo: AP

Afghanistan’s rulers are pariahs on the global stage, largely because of their restrictions on women and girls. The economy is struggling, infrastructure is poor, and poverty is rife.

And yet, foreigners are visiting the country, encouraged by the sharp drop in violence, increased flight connections with hubs like Dubai, and the bragging rights that come with holidaying in an unusual destination.

The numbers aren’t huge – they never were – but there’s a buzz around Afghan tourism.

In 2021, there were 691 foreign tourists. In 2022, that figure rose to 2,300. Last year, there were 7,000.

A view of Kabul, Afghanistan. Photo: AP

Mohammad Saeed, the head of the Tourism Directorate in Kabul, said the biggest foreign visitor market is China because of its proximity and large population. Afghanistan also has advantages over some of its neighbours.

“They’ve told me they don’t want to go to Pakistan because it’s dangerous and they get attacked. The Japanese have said this to me also,” Saeed said. “This is good for us.”

Pakistan police link attacks on Chinese to TTP’s ‘broken switch’ terror cell

But there are disadvantages, too.

Visas are difficult and expensive to access. Many countries severed ties with Afghanistan after the Taliban returned to power, and no country recognises them as the legitimate rulers of the country.

Afghan embassies either closed or suspended their operations. There’s an ongoing power struggle between Afghanistan’s embassies and consulates staffed by people from the former Western-backed administration, and those under the Taliban administration’s full control.

Saeed concedes there are obstacles for Afghan tourism to develop but said he was working with ministries to overcome them.

His ultimate aim is to have a visa on arrival for tourists, but that could be years away. There are problems with the road network, which is half-paved or non-existent in some parts of the country, and airlines largely avoid Afghan airspace.

The capital Kabul has the most international flights, but no Afghan airport has direct routes with major tourist markets like China, Europe, or India.

<img class="image-inline caption" src="https://cdn.i-scmp.com/sites/default/files/d8/images/canvas/2024/04/30/816f5541-bbdd-4392-acfb-3f3e674bfc6a_ed18453d.jpg" data-fid="14999045" data-resolution="1" width="2000" height="1333" title="The renovated Darul Aman Palace in Kabul, Afghanistan. Photo: AP

Despite the challenges, Saeed wants Afghanistan to become a tourism powerhouse, an ambition that appears to be backed by the Taliban’s top leaders.

“I have been sent to this department on the instructions of the elders (ministers). They must trust me because they’ve sent me to this important place.”

In a sign that the country is preparing for more overseas visitors, the country’s only five-star hotel, the Serena, has reopened its women’s spa and salon for foreign females after a months-long closure.

Foreigners must show their passport to access services. Women with “born in Afghanistan” on their ID are barred.

The restrictions on Afghan women and girls weigh on overseas travel companies, who say they try to focus on the positive aspect of cultural interactions by making donations, supporting local projects or only visiting family-run businesses.

Shane Horan, the founder of Rocky Road Travel, said visiting Afghanistan should not be seen as an endorsement of any particular government or political regime.

“Ultimately, the goal should be to support responsible tourism practices that contribute positively to the local economy and foster mutual respect and understanding, while also remaining cognisant of the broader political context in Afghanistan.”

Southeast heatwave: Thailand’s heat index tops 52 degrees as Philippines risks ‘overloaded’ power systems

Bangkok’s heat index – a measure of how hot it feels like when humidity is taken into account – was listed as above 52 degrees Celsius on Tuesday

It comes as Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr warned of possible brownouts as intense heat sears Southeast Asia, fuelling cooling demand

The northern province of Lampang has seen the highest temperature so far this year at 44.2 degrees, just shy of the highest temperature ever recorded in Thailand – 44.6 degrees – that was last seen in 2016 and 2023.

Thailand’s power usage surged to another record of 36,699 megawatts on Monday amid soaring temperatures, according to data on the state energy regulator’s website. That was the third time demand hit a new peak in about one week.

The weather bureau advised people to avoid outdoor activities for a long period of time with maximum temperatures in most regions expected to top 40 degrees on Tuesday.
Israel’s allies warn ICC action would hurt Gaza ceasefire chances

International Criminal Court arrest warrants could jeopardise peace talks, people said

Gap between Israel and Hamas in talks for a new ceasefire has narrowed recently

A Palestinian mourns relatives killed in Israeli bombardment, at the al-Najjar hospital in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. Photo: AFP

The United States and its allies are concerned that the International Criminal Court may issue arrest warrants for Israeli officials just as the country is getting closer to a ceasefire agreement with Hamas, potentially jeopardising a deal, people familiar with the matter said.

The worry is that Israel would back out of a truce if the ICC proceeds with the warrants, according to two of the people, who asked not to be identified discussing private deliberations.

Group of Seven nations have begun a quiet diplomatic effort to convey that message to the Hague-based court, the people said.

The ICC is weighing arrest warrants targeting both senior Israeli officials as well as the leadership of Hamas over the two sides’ conduct of the war in Gaza, the people said.

<img class="image-inline caption" src="https://cdn.i-scmp.com/sites/default/files/d8/images/canvas/2024/04/30/09696587-2361-4504-8968-91a1d78d56fa_861fd12e.jpg" data-fid="14998950" data-resolution="1" width="2000" height="1333" title="Destruction after an Israeli air strike in Rafah, Gaza Strip. Photo: AP

The New York Times previously reported that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu could be among those singled out.

Two of the people said that the gap between Israel and Hamas on an agreement to release hostages had narrowed in recent weeks and that a deal was now close. Hamas is designated as a terrorist organisation by the US and European Union.

Israel’s Netanyahu says will fight any sanctions on army battalions

“We’ve been really clear about the ICC investigation – we do not support it,” White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters on Monday. “We don’t believe that they have the jurisdiction.”

The potential arrest warrants have become a major concern for Israel and the country is talking to international partners about it, one person said.

Another said Netanyahu had asked Biden for help in a conversation Sunday to make sure the warrants aren’t issued. Axios reported that request earlier Monday.

An ICC spokesperson declined to comment.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken urged leaders of the militant group to quickly reach a decision on Israeli conditions for a temporary ceasefire.

Israel has been “extraordinarily generous” with proposals made during talks mediated by Qatar and Egypt to secure the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas, Blinken said at a special event of the World Economic Forum in Riyadh on Monday.

<img class="image-inline caption" src="https://cdn.i-scmp.com/sites/default/files/d8/images/canvas/2024/04/30/fe9ab876-d332-4cb9-97d8-a361417bcf2e_71369795.jpg" data-fid="14998951" data-resolution="2" width="2000" height="1332" title="Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with troops in the northern Gaza Strip in December. File photo: Avi Ohayon/GPO via Xinhua

“The eyes of the world should be on Hamas saying ‘take this deal’,” UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron told the gathering. “We’re in a better place potentially than we’ve been for a while.”

The New York Times reported Monday that Israel was ready to accept the release of 33 hostages, down from at least 40, during the first phase of a new truce.

Hamas has said it can’t free 40 women, elderly or sick captives as demanded in return for a six-week ceasefire because it doesn’t have enough hostages in that category.

Group of Seven allies have been pushing Israel to put off an incursion into Rafah, where more than a million Palestinians have taken refuge. An agreement could help bring an end to fighting in Gaza and put off the assault on the city, one of the people said.

On October 7, Hamas attacked Israel in surprise raids, killing more than 1,200 people and taking around 250 as hostages.

More than 34,000 Palestinians were killed in the ensuing Israeli campaign, according to the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza.

The US and other G7 nations have repeatedly urged Netanyahu to do more to protect civilians in Gaza, while remaining staunch allies and suppliers of arms.

The US has never been a party to the ICC, which began its work in 2002 as a “court of last resort” for victims of genocide, war crimes and other atrocities.

US President Joe Biden revoked sanctions imposed on the court during the Trump administration and has cooperated in some cases, especially around allegations of Russian war crimes in Ukraine.

The court’s chief prosecutor, Karim Khan, said in February that he was deeply concerned about the conduct of Israeli forces, as well as of Hamas fighters holding Israeli hostages.

“Those who do not comply with the law should not complain later when my office takes action pursuant to its mandate,” he said at the time.

The ICC works separately from the International Court of Justice, the UN’s main judicial body, which can’t try or punish individuals. That court ruled in January that Israel must act to prevent Palestinians from being killed or injured in response to a genocide case brought by South Africa.

Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz on Sunday instructed all his country’s missions worldwide to prepare for a wave of antisemitism, anti-Jewish and anti-Israeli outbreaks, following reports of the possible warrants.

He said issuing the warrants would harm Israel forces and “provide a morale boost to the terrorist organisation Hamas and the axis of radical Islam led by Iran against which we are fighting”.

Hong Kong’s Executive Council approves new mechanism that blocks cuts to minimum wage

Source says Executive Council has agreed to annual review of minimum wage as well as introduction of formula which will not allow future pay cuts

But new mechanism is expected to take effect next year, with review to become annual exercise from 2026

Photo: Sam Tsang

Hong Kong’s key decision-making body has approved the introduction of a mechanism to review the per-hour minimum wage which will not allow pay cuts in future, the Post has learned.

A source on Tuesday said the Executive Council also agreed to a proposal to review the minimum wage annually, instead of once every two years, confirming the Post’s earlier report.

The changes made to the review are the first in 13 years since Hong Kong introduced the statutory minimum wage in 2011 to provide protection for low-paid workers.

The new mechanism is expected to take effect next year, when the rate is due for review, instead of this year as earlier predicted by some insiders close to the Minimum Wage Commission.

The review would become an annual exercise in 2026, the source said.

Hong Kong business sector hails minimum wage formula as economist sounds alarm

Under the mechanism, the formula deciding the wage level each year will include factors such as the consumer price index (A), current gross domestic product growth and average GDP growth in the past 10 years.

If the formula produces a negative number, the minimum wage will not be reduced but frozen.

For example, if the level was reviewed this year, the minimum wage per hour would increase from the current HK$40 to HK$41.80, representing a 4.5 per cent increase.

HSBC boss Noel Quinn steps down as bank reports first-quarter profit that beat estimates thanks to sale of Canadian business

Announcing his retirement after five years at the helm, Quinn said it was the ‘right time’ to look for a better work-life balance

The lender’s net profit slipped 1 per cent from a year ago to US$10.2 billion, surpassing the US$9.24 billion profit expected by analysts polled by Bloomberg

HSBC surpassed first-quarter profit estimates thanks to a one-off gain from the sale of its Canadian business. Photo: Eugene Lee

Noel Quinn said he would retire as chief executive of HSBC after pushing Europe’s biggest bank to pay a larger dividend to its most important customers on the back of a US$10.2 billion first-quarter profit that easily beat estimates.

Quinn said it had been a “privilege” to lead the London-based lender for the last five years as it reported net profit down 1 per cent from a year ago at US$10.2 billion, or US$0.54 per share.

That surpassed the US$9.24 billion profit expected by analysts polled by Bloomberg, thanks to a one-off gain from the sale of its Canadian business.

Pre-tax profit fell 1.7 per cent from a year ago to US$12.65 billion, which was much better than the consensus estimate of US$7.9 billion.

The impressive numbers came on the back of a US$4.8 billion gain following the sale of HSBC’s banking business in Canada to Royal Bank of Canada, though this was partly offset by a US$1.1 billion impairment following the sale of its Argentina business.

“I’m pleased with our start to 2024. We completed the sale of our Canada business and agreed the sale of our Argentina business, both of which allow us to focus on markets with higher value international opportunities,” said CEO Noel Quinn in an earnings statement to the Hong Kong stock exchange on Tuesday.

In a separate statement, he said it was the “right time” to look for a better work-life balance and that he intends to “pursue a portfolio career”.

“It has been a privilege to lead HSBC,” Quinn added. “I never imagined when I started 37 years ago that I would have the honour of becoming group chief executive of this great bank.

“I am proud of what we have achieved, and it has only been possible because of the talent, dedication, and commitment of the people at HSBC.”

The bank said it is in the process of finding a successor and that Quinn will continue in his role during this process to ensure “a smooth and orderly transition.”

HSBC announced a new US$3 billion share buy-back programme that will commence soon, and a first-quarter dividend of US$0.10 per share, up slightly from US$0.09 in the first quarter 2023.

The lender announced a special dividend of US$0.21 per share in the first half of this year after completing the sale of its Canadian business.

The London-based bank generates much of its revenue in Asia.

Overall, the bank’s Asian business reported a first-quarter pre-tax profit decrease of 6.9 per cent from a year earlier to US$5.4 billion. Revenue rose by 3 per cent to US$20.8 billion, which was higher than estimates of US$16.53 billion.

Revenue growth was driven by the sales of the Canadian and Argentine units but also reflected growth in demand for wealth management products, HSBC said in its statement.

Net interest income fell by 3.3 per cent to US$8.7 billion, compared with US$9 billion a year earlier. The bank’s net interest margin, an important measure of profitability, fell 6 basis points to 1.63 per cent.

The bank said it expects to complete the sale of its Russian business sometime in the second quarter.

HSBC’s shares remained unchanged at HK$65.55 at the noon break on Tuesday, before the announcement.

The enclosure field is fixable. However in terms of media, the upstream rss-parser package does not support extracting it. It seems that this is fixed in the codebase in rbren/rss-parser@eb8a4ee , but it hasn't been made into a release.

So... Wait for upstream?

Meaningless: fewer Hong Kong employers resorting to inflated job titles to attract talent, survey finds

Less than 30 per cent of Hong Kong businesses use senior job titles to attract talent, though 60 per cent of young workers expect rapid promotions: Robert Walters poll

Experts say the trend is mostly limited to digital businesses and client-facing roles

He attributed the trend to the local job market being disrupted by a hiring boom and talent crunch in 2021 and 2022, leading to firms adding more titles rather than focusing on career growth.

But the job market has been weak this year, with hiring in the property and financial sectors hit by the economic slowdown in China. Vacancies in financial services, professional services and technology firms plummeted 35 to 38 per cent year on year in 2023, according to a report released in January by Hudson, another professional recruitment firm.

<img class="image-inline caption" src="https://cdn.i-scmp.com/sites/default/files/d8/images/canvas/2024/05/03/2aa7461d-0677-4625-8156-3f83963647ef_a596427f.jpg" data-fid="15010513" data-resolution="1" width="2000" height="1291" title="Job seekers line up to enter a recruitment fair hosted by the Hong Kong Top Talent Services Association in Sheung Wan in March this year. Photo: May Tse

Leading banks such as UBS, Morgan Stanley, HSBC, Goldman Sachs, Citigroup and JPMorgan Chase have made unprecedented cuts to their investment banking teams in Hong Kong due to a slowdown in mergers and acquisitions and a dearth of initial public offerings.

Recruitment specialists cautioned that job title inflation was generally limited to certain sectors and roles, predominantly client-facing and sales positions and newer, digital-wave businesses like virtual banks and e-commerce platforms.

“It’s the infusion of fintech into banking, especially in B2C [business-to-consumer] businesses,” said Sid Sibal, vice-president of Greater China and head of Hong Kong at Hudson, adding that most industries had not seen a material change.

He cited an example of a tech firm client where an account director position – a role that typically asks for eight to 12 years’ experience – was held by someone with under five years’ experience.

“Five years ago, this wouldn’t have happened,” said Sibal. “People used to have to earn the title of manager, now it gets thrown around in some sectors more easily.”

Others said that job title inflation was most visible at tech-related organisations, but the trend has also started to seep into traditional banking.

“Some of these new roles, I’m not even sure what they do,” said Benjamin Quinlan, CEO of strategy consultancy Quinlan & Associates and a former banker, joking that in some newer firms, “you can have a head of something in a department of one.”

It also found that 50 per cent of young employees consider managing a team to be the biggest factor in determining seniority.

In the case of traditional banks, it had become more common for promotion timelines to get strung out, said Quinlan.

There were more “career vice-presidents”– an upper-middle tier role – as banks delay employees’ progression to preserve cost structures and prevent the organisation from becoming too top-heavy, while trying to appease employees, he added.

Hush money trial: Trump denies sleeping in court, says he closes his eyes to ‘listen intensely’

Donald Trump responds to reports that said he appeared to doze off during his Manhattan trial

Former US president says he closes his ‘beautiful blue eyes, sometimes’ so that he can ‘listen intensely’

Photo: Reuters

Former US president Donald Trump says he didn’t fall asleep during his hush money trial.

Multiple reporters from outlets such as The New York Times, CNN, and The Washington Post have published reports noting that Trump appeared to doze off during his first criminal trial.

Trump has been regularly appearing in a Manhattan court since the trial kicked off on April 15. He is accused of falsifying business records to cover up a sexual affair with the porn star Stormy Daniels.

But the reports of him snoozing, Trump says, aren’t true at all.

“Contrary to the FAKE NEWS MEDIA, I don’t fall asleep during the Crooked D.A.’s Witch Hunt, especially not today,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post on Thursday. “I simply close my beautiful blue eyes, sometimes, listen intensely, and take it ALL in!!!”

Trump’s remarks come just a day after The Times’ Maggie Haberman told CNN’s Kaitlan Collins that it is “100 per cent true” that he was sleeping at some points during his trial.

Haberman, however, did acknowledge that there were times where Trump really was just closing his eyes.

“That is how he tries to just basically stay calm and deal with it. And whether that then leads to sleep or whatever, who knows?” Haberman said. “But he is sitting there with his eyes closed for long periods of time. It’s not always sleeping.”

This isn’t the first time the Trump campaign has refuted reports of him catching some shut-eye while in court. A representative for his campaign said in a statement to The Independent last month that the reports are “100% Fake News”.

But that hasn’t deterred people from cracking jokes at Trump’s expense.

“Imagine committing so many crimes, you get bored at your own trial,” Jon Stewart, the host of The Daily Show, said of Trump during an episode that aired on April 15.

Besides the case in Manhattan, Trump has been charged in three other criminal cases, including a state criminal case in Georgia over accusations that he attempted to overturn the 2020 election results.

The former president is also on the line for two federal cases: one relating to his attempts to overturn the 2020 election results and another where he’s accused of hoarding classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate after leaving office.

None of the three cases have firm trial dates set yet.

Read the original article on Business Insider

5-year-old becomes youngest Singaporean to conquer Everest base camp through ‘hard work and faith’

Abyan Imtiaz Irkiz, 5, has become the youngest Singaporean to reach the Mount Everest base camp, completing the feat with his father, Zikri Ali, on Monday

Before this, the youngest Singaporean to reach Everest base camp was Om Madan Garg, a six-year-old boy who did so in October 2022

It serves as a home base for mountaineers attempting to climb Mount Everest in Nepal.

The father and son duo, who have been documenting their journey on an Instagram account under the handle “abyan.irkiz”, recalled the six gruelling months of training that led to this moment.

“All the sweat, tears, and dedication over the last six months, including training during Ramadan, have led to this incredible achievement,” they wrote in an Instagram post.

<img class="image-inline caption" src="https://cdn.i-scmp.com/sites/default/files/d8/images/canvas/2024/05/03/6f203620-ea39-4b4c-89dc-1cd99f9a896e_03e2722f.jpg" data-fid="15010504" data-resolution="2" width="2000" height="1232" title="Zikri Ali and his son Abyan at the Mount Everest base camp on April 29. With some training, he can definitely do it.”

The father of three said that Abyan had, in a sense, learned to climb before he could even walk.

While the little one learned to walk properly without support at about age 13 or 14 months, he was already crawling up playground slopes at nine months old.

And the operator was impressed,” Zikri said.

It helps that the family likes to go on hikes together, an activity they do both locally and whenever they go on holidays.

Proper training for the father and son duo began sometime in November with 4km walks. Zikri gradually added length and incline to their training.

“Then, in December, we also went to China. At that time, he managed to get some experience hiking in the cold, in single-digit temperatures,” he added.

In an Instagram post published on Tuesday, Abyan’s mother, War War Lwin Tun, 41, said it was surreal to see how much her eldest son has grown – physically and mentally – over the last few months.

This achievement is not a miracle. It is an honest testimony of hard work and faithWar War Lwin Tun, Abyan’s mother

“Back in December, he boldly declared his goal to be the youngest Singaporean to reach Everest Base Camp.

“Now, he’s not only shown the world but also himself that nothing is impossible when you have the courage to try!

“Quoting what a good friend told me yesterday – this achievement is not a miracle.
How a translation app helped scammed Malaysians escape to freedom in Peru

Forty-three people were trafficked to Peru and imprisoned in a bungalow, where a gang forced them to call the scam targets in Malaysia

Two of the victims managed to flee and spoke to a neighbour about their plight using a translation app, prompting a police raid that freed the captives

Photo: Shutterstock

The 43 Malaysians rescued from a scam syndicate in Peru owe their freedom to the determination of two of their number – and also partly to a smartphone translation application.

It was one such app that helped them communicate their plight to a neighbour after the two victims climbed over the wall of the compound where they were imprisoned.

Furthermore, Peruvian police who raided the bungalow where they were imprisoned had never faced such a situation before, foreign ministry Sarawak regional office director Fenny Nuli said.

It was thanks to the ministry’s efforts that the rescued Malaysians were classified as victims, and not criminals, or they would have been jailed, she added.

Forget Macau, dirty Chinese cash has a new home: Southeast Asia’s scam hubs

Fenny said the victims told her they were locked in with all the windows closed and did not know if it was day or night.

“So these two victims got out and managed to get to a neighbour’s house.

“However, it was difficult for them to communicate in English, so what they did was to communicate using a translation app.

“Immediately after that, the police came and [informed the Malaysian embassy] about the situation,” she said in an interview on the TV Sarawak show “Dialog” on Thursday.

Of the 43 victims – 26 women and 17 men, mostly young people – 16 were from Sarawak, she added.

She said some of the victims told her that the syndicate assigned them to call Malaysians at night.

“So they would sleep during the day and work at night to call the scam targets in Malaysia (where it would be daytime).

The US, like most countries, does not recognise Taiwan as an independent state but opposes any unilateral attempt to change the status quo.

Taiwan had observer status at the UN health agency under the name Chinese Taipei from 2009 to 2016, during the presidency of Ma Ying-jeou from the mainland-friendly Kuomintang party.

That changed in 2017 after Tsai came to power and refused to recognise the 1992 consensus – an understanding that there is only one China but each side has its own interpretation of what that means.

Since then, Beijing has blocked Taipei from attending the WHA – which this year meets in Geneva from 27 May to 1 June – on the grounds that the DPP does not agree that the island and the mainland are “one China”.

The Covid-19 pandemic amplified support for the WHO to reinstate Taiwan’s observer status, following international praise for its handling of infection outbreaks and related aid efforts.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said after the result was announced that it did not change “the basic fact” that there is only one China.

Unusual terror alert for South Korea’s embassies fuels tensions with North, offers distraction from Yoon’s election loss

The sudden two-tier rise of the warning despite no major events for Seoul could signal precautions against a retaliation over a row on defected diplomats

Power holders on both sides could also be taking advantage of mounting hostilities to extend their rule

The “alert” level is issued when there is a “high likelihood” of terror attacks taking place, according to the statement.

South Korea’s terrorism alert is classified under four levels: attention, caution, alert and severe.

This is the first time the alert level has been raised by two notches since 2009, when the warning was enhanced from “caution” to the highest “severe” level as the country prepared for the Asean-Korea Special Summit in the southern island of Jeju.

Terrorism alerts at the highest level were issued during the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics and the 2019 Asean-South Korea Summit in the southern city of Busan.

According to the South Korean spy agency the National Intelligence Service (NIS) on the latest situation, the North has deployed agents to step up surveillance on Seoul’s diplomatic missions and identify targets for possible terror attacks.

South Korea Dior bag scandal: pastor probed for allegedly stalking Yoon’s wife

Many North Koreans including “a considerable number of diplomats” were said to have disappeared after Pyongyang last year lifted years of a pandemic lockdown and ordered them to return home.

North Korean officials in charge of their country’s expatriates are suspected of shifting the blame to the South to evade accountability for what Seoul says are “voluntary breakaways”.

The North Korean agents were believed to have falsely reported to Pyongyang that the exodus was orchestrated by the South, the NIS said, adding the North was also believed to be planning retaliations against Seoul’s diplomats.

“North Korean agents feel relatively freer in such countries that are friendly to Pyongyang”, Cho Han-bum, a senior researcher at state think tank the Korea Institute for National Unification (KINU), told This Week in Asia.

The terror threat from the North was in line with a change in its definition of inter-Korean relations from reunification-oriented, blood ties to those of “two belligerent states”, Cho said.

South Korea’s China ambassador and President Yoon’s ally faces abuse probe

The North’s Kim Jong-un in January this year declared that inter-Korean relations had plunged to “two states hostile to each other and the relations between two belligerent states, not the consanguineous or homogeneous ones any more”.

Cho warned: “Accordingly, the North Korean agents have to adapt to new operations that befit hostility with the South” including possible abductions and terror attacks against South Korean agents and diplomats.

The North’s diplomatic sphere has diminished over the past year.

It shut down embassies or consular offices in nine countries including Angola, Spain and Uganda and Hong Kong, apparently due to economic difficulties worsened by US-led sanctions.

The North’s long-term ally Cuba has meanwhile entered into full diplomatic ties with South Korea in February, to Pyongyang’s bafflement.

“The North would be tempted to fight back, attacking South Korean diplomats or abducting them to the North to present them as voluntary defectors for propaganda,” Cho said.
