Abstract

Singapore’s multicultural heritage is a cornerstone of its unique identity, but there is growing concern that younger generations are losing touch with their roots, risking the erosion of this diverse identity. HeritageHunt is an innovative project aimed at reconnecting Singaporeans with their heritage by blending virtual and physical experiences. This project utilizes cutting-edge technology and gamification to make cultural preservation engaging and interactive. In this article, we will explore how HeritageHunt addresses the challenges of preserving multicultural roots and promoting cultural awareness, education, and social cohesion.

Introduction

Singapore's rich multicultural heritage defines its character and serves as a source of pride for its citizens. However, recent trends suggest that younger generations are becoming increasingly disconnected from their cultural roots, posing a threat to the preservation of Singapore's diverse identity.

HeritageHunt: Bridging the Gap

HeritageHunt is a groundbreaking initiative that leverages technology to bridge this gap. It combines virtual and physical experiences to immerse participants in Singapore's multicultural history and heritage. Using the RouteXL3 API, HeritageHunt offers users custom heritage trails based on their location and available time. With Google Cloud's VertexAI, players can interact with artifacts, adding a personal touch to their exploration.

Gamification and Community Engagement

To make the experience even more engaging, HeritageHunt employs AWS’s AppSync and S3, allowing players to track their progress and engage in multiplayer events. This gamification element encourages friendly competition, promoting social cohesion and interaction. Players earn traceable collectibles and points that can be exchanged for rewards, such as museum passes, incentivizing continued participation.

During cultural festivals, HeritageHunt runs campaigns that lead players on scavenger hunts across Singapore, encouraging them to discover the rich culture the city has to offer. These campaigns not only provide a fun way to engage with heritage but also attract new participants, expanding the project's reach.

Educational Impact

HeritageHunt complements Singapore’s National Education lessons and targets youths by setting the foundations for self-directed learning and sowing the seeds of curiosity in our future generations. Additionally, it promotes the National Heritage Board’s community-run initiatives, aligning with educational goals.

Intergenerational Connections

The project also aims to foster intergenerational connections by involving pioneer generation volunteers as subject matter experts during physical pop-up events. This bridges the gap between generations and allows for the transfer of cultural knowledge.

Challenges and Funding

One significant challenge is funding. To overcome this, HeritageHunt plans to explore partnerships with cultural organizations and seek sponsorships from Mobile Network Operators (MNOs). Collaboration with the National Heritage Board will help in digitalizing Singapore’s history, ensuring a sustainable future for the project.

Security and Privacy

Considering the sensitive user data involved, HeritageHunt prioritizes security and privacy by using AWS and Google Cloud, both certified by IMDA at MTCS Level 3.
