WakePS3

(For a similar solution for the XBox One, see here and for a waking the PS3 from Windows, see here)

A script to power on your PS3 remotely over Bluetooth directly from a games folder that executes .sh-scripts inside RetroPie/Emulationstation, or from a Linux command line.

Should work on most Cambridge Silicon USB BT devices and most built-in Raspberry Pi BT chips. I have tested it successfully on two RPis, RPi3 with Jessie and RPi3+ with Stretch, respectively, and one PC with a BT dongle running Buster. Please check chip details with shell command "hciconfig hci0 version" and the device compatibility list.

The script was initially inspired by this Gist from Nom-DePlume. But having an always-on Raspberry Pi server, and with some help from Gimx' Command line wiki, it was faster and more convenient ssh to and to run a script from it, than to spin up a Linux VM from inside Windows.

Sadly, the Windows bluetooth stack doesn't yet seem to allow the same to be easily done directly from Windows, not even from WSL, which still has very limited access to hardware.

I've made a working attempt, using this script on a always-on and Bluetooth enabled Linux device(Raspberry Pi 3), to accomplish this indirectly from a Windows PC in this batch script package: https://github.com/Vegz78/PS3FromWin

There also seems to be an issue with changing the BT device address on the Raspberry Pi 4 on-board Cypress Semiconductor BT chip, where I only could get it to work on the RPi4 with a compatible BT USB dongle.

Any improvement tips; about better working solutions for automatically and remotely powering on the PS3 over Bluetooth directly from Windows, or getting the RPi4 on-board BT chip to work etc., would be greatly appreciated! Please post it as an issue inside the above mentioned Windows batch script package repository or here, respectively.

Feel free to copy, modify and use as you want. The script does what it's supposed to on my home system and won't be very actively supported, updated or maintained.

Prerequisites

  • Raspberry Pi with Raspbian (but should work on most Linux devices and distros, as well)
  • Gimx for Linux or Raspberry Pi, with sixaddr and bdaddr included
  • The BT device addresses of your PS3 and a controller currently paired to the PS3, check the GIMX documentation
  • The PS3_CallOfDutyBlackOps.xml config file in the ~/.gimx/config folder to run the script
    (Or any other xml config file, to be able to run it, but then you have to change the script, as well. It doesn't matter, as the script is terminated after 2 seconds and the PS3 hopefully is powered on...)
  • RetroPie/Emulationstation with Steam or other games menu folders that execute .sh-scripts

Features

  • Automatically power on your PS3 remotely over Bluetooth
  • Can be run directly from the RetroPie Moonlight/Steam games list or from a Linux command line

Usage

1 - Install GIMX with sixaddr and bdaddr included and add a controller xml config file to the ~/.gimx/config folder. The last releases of GIMX v.8 works for Debian Buster, last of v.7 for Stretch, last of v.6 for Jessie etc.

2 - Download and copy the _WakePS3.sh script into your RetroPie Moonlight/Steam roms folder, typically "/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/moonlight". Make sure it's executable.
Alternatively, in your desired folder, run:
git clone https://github.com/Vegz78/WakePS3 && sudo chmod +x ./WakePS3/_WakePS3.sh

3 - Edit _WakePS3.sh with the global variables' 2 OR 3 needed BT device addresses. You can find the PS3 master and controller bluetooth addresses by connecting a PS3 Controller already powered on and paired with the PS3 console you want to wake by USB to your Raspberry Pi and typing the command '''sixaddr'''. (If you get your BT device's address from the controller instead of the PS3's master BT address, try pairing the controller to the PS3 again and disable bluetooth on the Raspberry before connecting the controller by USB again).

4 - Start RetroPie and navigate to the Moonlight/Steam games list menu.

5 - Run the _WakePS3 entry.

Example of sh script games menu in Emulationstation

Edit the file /etc/emulationstation/es_systems.cfg as loosely inspired by TechWizTime.

Add something like this:

  <system>
    <name>Steam</name>
    <fullname>Steam</fullname>
    <path>/home/pi/RetroPie/roms/moonlight</path>
    <extension>.sh .SH</extension>
    <command>%ROM%</command>
    <platform>steam</platform>
    <theme>steam</theme>
  </system>
