xLights macOS build instructions


This document describes how **developers** should set up their tool chain to build
xLights on macOS.

xLights is written in C++ and uses the wxWidgets library as a
compatibility layer across operating systems.

On macOS, compilation is done using Xcode. Code::Blocks is not used.
Xcode can be downloaded from the Apple developer web site or the App Store. Make
sure you install the version of Xcode that matches your version of
macOS. For example, I use macOS Sonoma (14.3.1), so I installed Xcode 15.3.
(instructions below are tested with Xcode 15.3)

The latest wxWidgets release (3.2.1) will not work as we need some API's that have
been added since then.  We also have several other fixes in place that fix various
bugs we have encountered, configurations we need, etc...


ALTERNATIVE METHOD:
Instead of building all the third partly libs listed below, if you are using the
EXACT same version of Xcode as the Xcode Cloud nightlies are using, then you
can do something like:
git clone  https://github.com/xLightsSequencer/xLights-macOS-dependencies
to grab the pre-build libs and then create the symlink in xlights/macOS:
ln -sf /PATH/TO/CLONED/xLights-macOS-dependencies dependencies
to point that new location.   In order for the clone to work, you must have
the git "lfs" plugin installed via "brew install git-lfs" or follow instructions
at https://docs.github.com/en/repositories/working-with-files/managing-large-files/installing-git-large-file-storage


IMPORTANT NOTE:
Some of the third party libraries that need to be built below will NOT build if
any directory in the path contains a space.   Make sure the directory that is
used does not contain any spaces.  Also, the builds will be quite "large" and thus
doing the builds in a directory that is synced to the cloud will consume a lot
of cloud space. Make sure your cloud provider/plan has plenty of free space.
Alternatively, use a directory that is not synced to the cloud.  Since all of this
is easily recovered (just by rebuilding), there isn't much need for it to be
cloud backed up.


To get the latest code that we've tested, do:

First, setup the target directories:

If you are planning on being able to build Release builds, you will need to a release build
wxWidgets first.  If not doing release builds, this can be skipped.

Next, you will use Xcode to compile xLights. Most of the steps are listed here:

However, if you have the XCode command line tools installed, you should just be able to run "xcodebuild" and it should build and compile xLights automatically.



Other library notes:
Note:  These instructions now assume Xcode 12 with support for Arm64.
You must set the env variables at the top first to setup the architecture and version targets
