my PR to cardinal needs a little work to be properly backwards compatible, but too busy right now, we could merge this and point at my fork though |

This builds on #17 which did not display well in xterm, and did not pass options to cardinal correctly. (it should have been second argument, not
highlightOptionsproperty.
