Reviving the suggestion in PR #3 from @dlaw.

If the smallest tile index is a and the largest tile index is b,
then the number of tiles is (b + 1) - a.

For example, if a = b, then the number of tiles is 1.

I don't have time to confirm and merge, but it seems like a good suggestion worth keeping
