GBE+ 1.8

It's April 1st. No jokes. Only business. Once again, not many exciting changes under the hood. GBE+ is in the very last stretches of emulating some very complex and exotic hardware, so much of last year's work was to that end. You know what they say, the last 10% of a project takes 90% of the time.

Notable Changes:

  • Reworked Pokemon Mini netplay to be much simpler. All players need to do is basically point each instance of GBE+ to the correct player (e.g. Player 1, Player 2, etc) using the F4 hotkey.
  • Added support for the Glucoboy. GBE+ now allows players to manipulate various stats that unlock in-game Glucose Reward Points.
  • Improved support for the Campho Advance. Menus work, contact data can be saved, and handles basic virtual calls. No proper audio/video yet.
  • Improved support for the Play-Yan and Play-Yan Micro. No audio/video output yet
  • Added support for the Nintendo MP3 player. No audio/video output yet, but menus are accessible.

It's April 1st again, but it's all business with this release. Probably not nearly as exciting as last year (which saw a new core + emulation of a lot of new hardware). However, it's a sign of progress that most of the Game Boy's accessories and specialty cartridges are emulated in some form. Just a bit more to go!

Windows binary attached below. It has only been tested on Windows 10, and it should run fine for both the Qt and command-line versions. The portable version is also working, so users shouldn't have to copy anything to AppData, just extract and run.

Notable Changes:

  • Added support for motion controls using SDL2. Verified with a DS4. Users will need to calibrate the settings to their preferences depending on their controller and the game they're playing.
  • Added partial support for the Play-Yan and Play-Yan Micro. Plays dummy audio and video files, but all of the menus are accessible. Plays the "Garage Games" when the appropriate video thumbnails are used.
  • Added partial support for the Campho Advance. Preliminary framework for booting and accessing some menus. Not publicly usable until the ROM is fully dumped.
  • Revamped game save handling. GBE+ no longer uses names such as filename.gba.sav for game saves. Instead, it uses the more conventional filename.sav to make it easier to import from/export to other emulators. DMG/GBC games will now use their correct filesizes instead of the 128KB saves GBE+ formerly used. MBC3 real-time clock saves will now use the same standard as BGB, VBA-M, and mGBA.
  • AM3 videos can now be played by pointing GBE+ to a folder of all the .AM3 files instead of a SmartMedia card dump. Some videos are only playable through this method due to fragmentation present on the card dump's filesystem.
  • Full support for the GBA Music Recorder/Jukebox. GBE+ will now play real songs and even allows recording voice memos or karaoke through a microphone.
  • GBE+ will now scan the data/bin/firmware folder for BIOS or Boot ROM files and automatically use the best one for whatever system it is currently emulating. No more setting the path of each file individually, just chuck them all in one spot and be done with it.
  • Turbo-Fire/Auto-Fire added to all cores. Currently only configurable through the .ini file
  • Added an option to map input for the DDR Finger Pad.

Another year, another release. As always this release contains everything that managed to get done since last April. It's actually been quite busy lately.

Windows binary attached below. It may cause a "this program has stopped working" error when exiting the Qt version. It's a known issue caused by something in Qt5, and only on Windows. Once a new GUI toolkit is used, this problem should be eliminated. The command-line version does not have any such problems.

Notable Changes

  • New Pokemon Mini core added. Largely complete and works very well with most commercial and homebrew titles.
  • Added multiplayer for the Pokemon Mini core via an emulated infrared port.
  • Added support for the GB Memory Cartridge. Recommended to use the GB Memory Binary Maker to make a compatible ROM and MAP file.
  • Added partial support for the GBA Wireless Adapter. Multiplayer is not functional, but it can access some menus.
  • Added support for the Joy Carry Cartridge (8M DACS cartridge used for Hikaru no Go 3)
  • Added support for the Magical Watch.
  • Added support for the Advance Movie Adapter. Requires users to dump the SmartMedia card, AM3 firmware, and 16-byte DES key. Refer to the AM3 SmartMedia Card Dumping Guide for more info.
  • Added partial support for Kemco's GBA Music Recorder/Jukebox. Only plays/records dummy audio files, but all of the menus are accessible.

Another release. Once again, nothing special, just whatever was finished by April 1st!

Windows binary attached below. It may cause a "this program has stopped working" error when exiting the Qt version. It's a known issue caused by something in Qt5, and only on Windows. Once a new GUI toolkit is used, this problem should be eliminated. The command-line version does not have any such problems.

Notables Changes:

  • Improved NDS support. Still WIP, but a number of games are actually in a playable state (even a few 3D ones).
  • Added full support for the Singer IZEK 1500, Jaguar JN-100, and Jaguar JN-2000 sewing machines.
  • Added support for the Slot-2 device Magic Reader from Konami.
  • Added support for the Virtureal Racing System.
  • Added a Virtual Cursor option for the NDS core. Controls basic touchscreen input using only a keyboard or joystick.
