@comoglu, I don't know the reasoning for this change but in any case, this is something that would have to be adressed upstream, wherever Flinn-Engdahl regions are maintained. If there even is such a place.

I don't think we should change region names unless there is an official change to Flinn-Engdahl region definitions, otherwise it might be confusing to have differing namings.

As explained in the following URL, Irian Jaya has renamed West Papua in 2007.

OK. Still, we'd need to find out where Flinn-Engdahl regions are officially defined and updated and make sure it gets fixed there so it all stays consistent. Is there an official Flinn-Engdahl region definition somewhere?

This seems to just have it as "Papua, Indonesia": https://www.seismicportal.eu/feregions.html

But again, where is the official definition?

I am not aware of an official Flinn Engdahl region definition even though there are some places where we can find more or less the same set of information
like below
USGS https://earthquake.usgs.gov/data/flinn_engdahl.php
and ISC http://www.isc.ac.uk/standards/FEregions/
As I am not suggesting full replacement of all regions, It should be fair to replace the IRIAN JAYA with WEST PAPUA as it has officially renamed in 2007..

I agree it should be renamed if the name changed officially, but this should happen upstream. It looks like USGS might be in charge of FE region definitions, so I think they should be contacted.

According to the last revision of the Flinn-Engdahl regionalisation Scheme (Young, J.B., Presgrave, B.W., Aichele, H., Wiens, D.A. and Flinn, E.A., 1996, The Flinn-Engdahl Regionalisation Scheme: the 1995 revision, Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors, v. 96, p. 223-297.)

"The Working Group on Regionalisation of the International Association of Seismology and Physics of the Earth's Interior (IASPEI) Commission on Practice has the task of defining a new standard for the regionalisation of the Earth."

This is the initial version of F-E. Only maps are available with those papers you referred to.

If IASPEI is in charge of F-E, then it should be on their web pages, but there's nothing to be found there.

Are you referring to the PEPI 1996 paper? It has loads of maps but it also has an appendix with a list of all region names.

In any case, my main point stands, this is an issue that has to be addressed in the definitive, authoritative version of F-E. It seems there isn't one though, IASPEI is supposed to have it but they don't and it seems USGS has taken it over, so I suggest those two parties should be contacted with this renaming issue and the more general issue of the need for a definitive version of F-E that can be targeted with such renaming issues.
