Introduction to Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring

The ultimate aim of Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring (NILM) is to estimate the energy consumed by individual appliances from just the whole-house aggregate meter signal.
In other words, it produces an (estimated) itemised energy bill using just a single, whole-house power meter.

This process is sometimes called:

  • "non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM)"
  • "non-intrusive appliance load monitoring (NALM or NIALM)"
  • "electriciy disaggregation"
  • "energy disaggregation"
  • "smart meter disaggregation"
