Literate Programming & Configuration Setup

Getting Started | Documentation | FAQ | Screenshots (forthcoming)

Introduction

Literate programming changed how I approach any sort of coding or writing.

I do not have a background in computer science or programming. However, I love to tinker, and I interact with JavaScript frequently in my job. I am also getting more and more interested in the digital humanities and digital scholarship.

Literate programming is a style of programming in which you tell the computer what you want it to do via natural language and human logic. You give information and context, the how and why, just as you would with documentation. But embedded in that documentation are code blocks; these code blocks are then “tangled” to external documents, creating whatever software or program. Instead of writing your code and documentation separately, you do it all in one place.

Another benefit of this method is that you don’t necessarily have to write it in the order it will eventually tangle in. Using tools like noweb, you can introduce your chunks and then actually write them later, in any order. It’s very nifty!

I use literate programming to configure my Doom Emacs as well as my computer’s dotfiles. I have also started using it in my job as a librarian; I have to configure our Primo VE discovery layer, and I use literate programming in our Node.js development environment.

I have given several presentations recently on the importance of good documentation and how literate programming can be a method for that. However, a one hour or less presentation is not a good venue for such a demonstration. Hence, this repository.

I hope you find it useful!

Features

  • Org Mode
  • Emacs
  • Embedded code blocks
  • Reproducible code and research
  • Natural language and human logic

Prerequisites

This is based on my own configuration. It is very possible to do literate programming without this setup, but this is what I have. You can look at my dotfiles and my Doom Emacs configuration for more details on my setup.
