What is Europeana?

Europeana is a catalyst for change in the world of cultural heritage. Europeana’s mission is to create new ways for people to engage with their cultural history, whether it's for work, learning or pleasure. Europeana’s services are under constant development by content and technology projects, collectively referred to as the Europeana project group. More information can be found on the Europeana Pro website

What is the API?

Europeana is an internet portal that acts as an interface to millions of books, paintings, films, museum objects and archival records that have been digitised throughout Europe. The software is open source, and is available via Europeana's Github:

  • The portal repository provides the front-end
  • The API repository (this one) provides the related data services such as the Application Programming Interface
  • The CoreLib repository provides the underlying functionality for both the Portal and API
