Welcome to the Code-Island-Website wiki!

Current status of this project as of 11 November 2014

Code Island has chosen to use the Jekyll platform and hosting on Git Pages for its website.

Developers can use this resource for Jekyll tutorials and support

Content creators should review the Jekyll tutorial, especially this page on writing posts and the pages that follow

Code Island's Jekyll site uses Markdown as its standard method for creating content. It is a simple, lightweight tool, but with limited capabilities. Use this Markdown syntax reference to get started.

Some content creators may prefer to use Prose, which is a web-based, semi-WYSIWYG Markdown editor

Image Standards

Definition of image standards represents an ongoing inquiry. At present, the following rules can provide guidance.

All Images

Uncompressed JPGs or PNGs are the preferred file type. Please use PNGs for blank-background images. Only use GIFs for animations.

Please do not use image compression when creating JPGs or GIFs. Limit file size via image size. Compressed images look lossy and yucky and not nice.

Horizontal Images

As a rule, horizontal (landscape) images used in posts and static pages should be 600px wide, with a preferred aspect ratio of 4:3 (600 x 450).

Set the image as its own content block. In Markdown, leave a blank line above and below the image code.

For future use and flexibility, please include the following image sizes for all horizontal images:

  • original size
  • 1024px width
  • 600px width
  • 300px width

Vertical Images

Usage standards for vertical (portrait) images are not yet defined. The preferred aspect ratio is 3:4 (576x728, 450x600, 225x300).

For future use, please include the following image sizes for all horizontal images:

  • original size
  • 768px height
  • 450px width
  • 225px width
